What Money Can't Buy: The Moral Limits of Markets, by Michael J. Sandel

Should we pay children to read books or to get good grades? Should we allow corporations to pay for the right to pollute the atmosphere? Is it ethical to pay people to test risky new drugs or to donate their organs? What about hiring mercenaries to fight our wars? Auctioning admission to elite universities? Selling citizenship to immigrants willing to pay?
In What Money Can't Buy, Michael J. Sandel takes on one of the biggest ethical questions of our time: Is there something wrong with a world in which everything is for sale? If so, how can we prevent market values from reaching into spheres of life where they don't belong? What are the moral limits of markets?
In recent decades, market values have crowded out nonmarket norms in almost every aspect of life―medicine, education, government, law, art, sports, even family life and personal relations. Without quite realizing it, Sandel argues, we have drifted from having a market economy to being a market society. Is this where we want to be?
In his New York Times bestseller Justice, Sandel showed himself to be a master at illuminating, with clarity and verve, the hard moral questions we confront in our everyday lives. Now, in What Money Can't Buy, he provokes an essential discussion that we, in our market-driven age, need to have: What is the proper role of markets in a democratic society―and how can we protect the moral and civic goods that markets don't honor and that money can't buy?

Sandel's world seems to be firmly divided between God and Mammom; in return for evicting the marketeers from the areas he holds sacred, he is prepared to grant them ruling powers over all the others. — Andrew Ross

Review

“Michael Sandel's What Money Can't Buy is a great book and I recommend every economist to read it, even though we are not really his target audience. The book is pitched at a much wider audience of concerned citizens. But it taps into a rich seam of discontent about the discipline of economics.... The book is brimming with interesting examples which make you think.... I read this book cover-to-cover in less than 48 hours. And I have written more marginal notes than for any book I have read in a long time.” ―Timothy Besley, Journal of Economic Literature

“Provocative. . . What Money Can't Buy [is] an engaging, compelling read, consistently unsettling and occasionally unnerving. . . [It] deserves a wide readership.” ―David M. Kennedy, Democracy

“Brilliant, easily readable, beautifully delivered and often funny. . . an indispensable book on the relationship between morality and economics.” ―David Aaronovitch, The Times (London)

“Sandel is probably the world's most relevant living philosopher.” ―Michael Fitzgerald, Newsweek

“In a culture mesmerized by the market, Sandel's is the indispensable voice of reason…. What Money Can't Buy. . . must surely be one of the most important exercises in public philosophy in many years.” ―John Gray, New Statesman

“[An] important book. . . Michael Sandel is just the right person to get to the bottom of the tangle of moral damage that is being done by markets to our values.” ―Jeremy Waldron, The New York Review of Books

“The most famous teacher of philosophy in the world, [has] shown that it is possible to take philosophy into the public square without insulting the public's intelligence. . .[He] is trying to force open a space for a discourse on civic virtue that he believes has been abandoned by both left and right.” ―Michael Ignatieff, The New Republic

“[Sandel]is such a gentle critic that he merely asks us to open our eyes. . . Yet What Money Can't Buy makes it clear that market morality is an exceptionally thin wedge. . . Sandel is pointing out. . . [a] quite profound change in society.” ―Jonathan V. Last, The Wall Street Journal

“What Money Can't Buy is the work of a truly public philosopher. . . [It] recalls John Kenneth Galbraith's influential 1958 book, The Affluent Society. . .Galbraith lamented the impoverishment of the public square. Sandel worries about its abandonment--or, more precisely, its desertion by the more fortunate and capable among us. . .[A]n engaging, compelling read, consistently unsettling. . . it reminds us how easy it is to slip into a purely material calculus about the meaning of life and the means we adopt in pursuit of happiness.” ―David M. Kennedy, Democracy: A Journal of Ideas

“[Sandel] is currently the most effective communicator of ideas in English.” ―The Guardian

“Michael Sandel is probably the most popular political philosopher of his generation. . .The attention Sandel enjoys is more akin to a stadium-filling self-help guru than a philosopher. But rather than instructing his audiences to maximize earning power or balance their chakras, he challenges them to address fundamental questions about how society is organized. . . His new book [What Money Can't Buy] offers an eloquent argument for morality in public life.” ―Andrew Anthony, The Observer (London)

“What Money Can't Buy is replete with examples of what money can, in fact, buy. . . Sandel has a genius for showing why such changes are deeply important.” ―Martin Sandbu, Financial Times

“One of the leading political thinkers of our time…. Sandel's new book is What Money Can't Buy: The Moral Limits of Markets, and I recommend it highly. It's a powerful indictment of the market society we have become, where virtually everything has a price.” ―Michael Tomasky, The Daily Beast

“To understand the importance of [Sandel's] purpose, you first have to grasp the full extent of the triumph achieved by market thinking in economics, and the extent to which that thinking has spread to other domains. This school sees economics as a discipline that has nothing to do with morality, and is instead the study of incentives, considered in an ethical vacuum. Sandel's book is, in its calm way, an all-out assault on that idea…. Let's hope that What Money Can't Buy, by being so patient and so accumulative in its argument and its examples, marks a permanent shift in these debates.” ―John Lancaster, The Guardian

“Sandel is among the leading public intellectuals of the age. He writes clearly and concisely in prose that neither oversimplifies nor obfuscates…. Sandel asks the crucial question of our time: ‘Do we want a society where everything is up for sale? Or are there certain moral and civic goods that markets do not honor and money cannot buy?'” ―Douglas Bell, The Globe and Mail (Toronto)

“Deeply provocative and intellectually suggestive…. What Sandel does…is to prod us into asking whether we have any reason for drawing a line between what is and what isn't exchangeable, what can't be reduced to commodity terms…. [A] wake-up call to recognize our desperate need to rediscover some intelligible way of talking about humanity.” ―Rowan Williams, Prospect

“There is no more fundamental question we face than how to best preserve the common good and build strong communities that benefit everyone. Sandel's book is an excellent starting place for that dialogue.” ―Kevin J. Hamilton, The Seattle Times

“Poring through Harvard philosopher Michael Sandel's new book. . . I found myself over and over again turning pages and saying, 'I had no idea.' I had no idea that in the year 2000, 'a Russian rocket emblazoned with a giant Pizza Hut logo carried advertising into outer space.'. . . I knew that stadiums are now named for corporations, but had no idea that now 'even sliding into home is a corporate-sponsored event.'. . . I had no idea that in 2001 an elementary school in New Jersey became America's first public school 'to sell naming rights to a corporate sponsor.' Why worry about this trend? Because, Sandel argues, market values are crowding out civic practices.” ―Thomas Friedman, New York Times

“An exquisitely reasoned, skillfully written treatise on big issues of everyday life.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“In his new book, Michael Sandel --the closest the world of political philosophy comes to a celebrity -- argues that we now live in a society where ‘almost everything can be bought and sold.' As markets have infiltrated more parts of life, Sandel believes we have shifted from a market economy to ‘a market society,' turning the world -- and most of us in it -- into commodities. And when Sandel proselytizes, the world listens…. Sandel's ideas could hardly be more timely.” ―Rosamund Urwin, Evening Standard (London)

Awesome!
By Jeffery L Irvin Jr
Sandel is a wonderful author, and you can tell by the way he writes that he is a wonderful teacher in the classroom.

I can recommend this book along with his previous book, "Justice: What's the Right Thing to Do?"

These books offer no easy or ready-made answers. Instead, they invite us to reflect on moral and ethical dilemmas, and how we humans try to deal with them.

The bottom line is that morality, just like anything else in this universe, cannot violate the first law of thermodynamics. We live in a relatively closed system as a society and so decisions--political, moral, or economic--all require a knowledge of what we must give before we get.

In his latest book Sandel asks us to consider what we are giving up when we try to put a market price on everything in life.

Oscar Wilde once defined the cynic as a man who knows the price of everything but the value of nothing. I believe that Sandel is trying to warn us against becoming a completely cynical society, a society that looks at everything through the filter of an account ledger, blinding ourselves to all the other ways in which we should relate to one another in a society.

Read this book! You will be glad you did.

Money Is Not Fair
By Geoff Huggins
Sandel has all the credentials that make for a fine commentary on modern American commercial society. His deep sense of what constitutes justice informs his many examples in the book of how businesses and corporations have stolen the public arena for their advertisements. He clearly describes how this creeping phenomenon has taken over the commons and usurped public spaces for their capitalistic messages. According to dispassionate marketing theories, these intrusions make sense, in the context of maximizing efficiency and promoting the common good. Sandel points out, however, that the cost is a loss of fairness and a warped idea of what community should be.

Add to Cart: One Human Kidney, Two Line Standers, and Three Foreign Mercenaries
By Jacob
In What Money Can’t Buy: The Moral Limits of Markets, Michael Sandel presents many different, thought-provoking situations to determine what the morality of markets is. In addition, he asks what we, as citizens, are going to do about this because our society is drifting from having a free market economy to a market society with every purchase. I really enjoyed Sandel’s book and thought he was a fantastic author. He set up each situation, such as the purchase of human organs or to stand in line for a congressman, like it was a new chapter, so following the scenarios was really easy to do and I found it very hard to get lost while reading this book. Furthermore, Sandel is a Harvard professor, so he has ethos when presenting his case, which only adds to the whole dimension of the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in economics, philosophy, or is just looking to kill a car ride; this book will keep you entertained, while forming an opinion for yourself. After reading this book, a person will begin to question each commodity purchase because this book will force a person to think that way.

Selected as one of NPR's Best Books of 2016, this book offers superior learning tools for teachers and students, from A to Z.

An explosive growth in research on how people learn has revealed many ways to improve teaching and catalyze learning at all ages. The purpose of this book is to present this new science of learning so that educators can creatively translate the science into exceptional practice. The book is highly appropriate for the preparation and professional development of teachers and college faculty, but also parents, trainers, instructional designers, psychology students, and simply curious folks interested in improving their own learning.

Based on a popular Stanford University course, The ABCs of How We Learn uses a novel format that is suitable as both a textbook and a popular read. With everyday language, engaging examples, a sense of humor, and solid evidence, it describes 26 unique ways that students learn.

Each chapter offers a concise and approachable breakdown of one way people learn, how it works, how we know it works, how and when to use it, and what mistakes to avoid. The book presents learning research in a way that educators can creatively translate into exceptional lessons and classroom practice.

The book covers field-defining learning theories ranging from behaviorism (R is for Reward) to cognitive psychology (S is for Self-Explanation) to social psychology (O is for Observation). The chapters also introduce lesser-known theories exceptionally relevant to practice, such as arousal theory (X is for eXcitement). Together the theories, evidence, and strategies from each chapter can be combined endlessly to create original and effective learning plans and the means to know if they succeed. 26 illustrations

Review
“The book serves as a much-needed bridge between new revelations in the science of learning and everyday classroom practices. Each section is accessible, concise and well-stocked with primary references and resources.”
- NPR Books, Best of 2016

“Daniel Schwartz and his co-authors have developed an easy-to-understand, easy-to-use synthesis of the learning literature without oversimplifying the complexity of the teaching and learning process. I am particularly impressed with the inclusion of multiple examples, potential risks, and possible misapplications, along with the acknowledgement that no one technique, by itself, will likely work in every situation. This book does a wonderful job introducing usable knowledge that can be flexibly applied by those seeking to encourage learning.”
- David B. Daniel, PhD, Professor of Psychology, James Madison University

“Packed with tips, tools, and exercises for every type of learner and learning situation, The ABCs of How We Learn is a book whose utility goes far beyond the classroom, but into every area of life―from remembering your password to learning to play golf―and it should be required reading for us all.”
- PsychCentral

Very comprehensive layout of available ideas about learning. One of the greatest strengths is discussing "risks" or areas where such general approach backfires. It is important to know the limitation or negative evidence, which contributes to deeper learning.

Great resource for reviewing Elements of Literature
By A. Brand
This is a great product to review elements of literature, and to make sure the student grasped previously taught concepts. It is only 48 pages, of which 34 of them are worksheets along with succinct definitions and examples. So do not expect this to serve as your primary teaching source. However, it does a very good job with the 48 pages provided, and I was happy with the quality of the product. We home school and use a spiral teaching method, so it was useful for that application.

Disappointed
By CookieGirl
I was really disappointed with this product. It wasn't as helpful as I thought it was going to be. There were some nice resources in the back, examples of stories to use with different kinds of literary concepts like irony. Not worthwhile.

About the Author
Alhazred was a mad poet of Sana, in Yemen, who is said to have flourished during the period of the Ommiade caliphs, circa 700 A.D. He visited the ruins of Babylon and the subterranean secret of Memphis and spent ten years alone in the great southern desert of Arabia—the Roba El Khaliyeh or "Empty Space" of the ancients—and "Dahna" or "Crimson" desert of the modern Arabs, which is held to be inhabited by protective evil spirits and monsters of death. Of this desert many strange and unbelievable marvels are told by those who pretend to have penetrated it. In his last years Alhazred dwelt in Damascus. Of his final death or disappearance (738 A.D.) many terrible and conflicting things are told. He is said by Ebn Khallikan (12th cent. biographer) to have been seized by an invisible monster in broad daylight and devoured horribly before a large number of fright-frozen witnesses. Of his madness many things are told. He claimed to have seen the fabulous Irem, or City of Pillars, and to have found beneath the ruins of a certain nameless desert town the shocking annals and secrets of a race older than mankind. He was only an indifferent Moslem, worshipping unknown entities whom he called Yog-Sothoth and Cthulhu.

The Marriage Ring (Scandals and Seductions Book 3), by Cathy Maxwell

The woman who will one day wear Richard Lynsted's ring will be genteel, dainty, and well-bred.

This eliminates Grace MacEachin on all three counts. A hellion of the first order, the alluring, infuriating woman would be nothing more than a passing temptation to an upstanding gentleman like Richard—if it weren't for the fact that she's trying to blackmail his father!

Or, as Grace sees it, trying to get justice—and maybe just the slightest hint of revenge on the family that tore her life asunder when she was just a girl. And as for Lynsted, well, the stuffy, humorless man wouldn't suffer for time spent in company more exciting than that of his company ledgers. Only when Richard gets Grace alone, she discovers he may know a thing or two about excitement after all . . .

Hero steals the scenes in this sweet tale
By Melissa
I was delighted with Cathy Maxwell's new tale The Marriage Ring, largely because the hero is so unexpected. He is really the star of this novel.

Richard Lynsted is upright, moral and a wee bit judgmental and even at age twenty-nine he longs for his father's approval. He believes he can earn it when he tries to thwart a blackmail attempt against his father and uncle. Problem is the blackmailer is a beautiful Scot who is outspoken and angry.

Grace MacEachin is also trying to win her father's approval. Her sire was convicted of embezzling money from an elderly lady and sent away to a penal colony for years. During her father's absence everything fell apart for Grace, she left her Inverness home for London and is now an actress. She believes in her father's innocence and is convinced that Richard's father and uncle were the real culprits, so she sends them a note demanding money or she will tell the magistrates that they were involved with the embezzlement.

Richard is a fair minded person and after meeting Grace, is willing to hear her side of the story and he is ready to meet her father too. This necessitates a trip to Scotland and it is on this journey that Richard and Grace really discover each other.

Both leads are distrustful and longing for parental approval and yet both have lived their lives very differently. Grace is defiant and her past is less than perfect. Richard is a model citizen but he is missing joy and companionship. During their long journey to Scotland they take stock of their lives and really grow into a loving couple. Grace just seems to mature, she realizes she has been headstrong and her escape to London was not ever going to solve her problems.

Richard is so good and honorable it is almost impossible not to like him. Yes, he is a bit reserved but he is also incredibly kind hearted, brave and heartbreakingly vulnerable too. His metamorphosis from stern unbending barrister to open hearted, loving hero is wonderful.

There are a few sections of this novel that get bogged down a little and Grace is a little too forward but hero Richard more than makes up for these little problems. The dialogue is also good (these two speak to each other with respect and affection). This is a definite recommend.

Good overall, wanted an epilogue
By Chase
I really wanted to give this book a five star rating, but the end of the book held me back. That's not to say the end of the book was bad (it wasn't) but I was hoping for more. The characters are refreshing and, even though they come to love each other in such a short period of time, the reader can appreciate what they go through together. I wanted this book to keep going and, as I approched the end, I knew it would be wrapped up too quickly. I would have really loved an epilogue...a letter from Grace to her friend Fiona (from Seduction at Christmas) telling of her marriage, or a look ahead to Grace's and Richard's married years...something that would have given me that extra satisfaction at the end of the story.

Other than that, a solid romance and definitely one I will re-read.

The Marriage Ring
By mnix
The Honorable Richard Lynsted knows exactly the kind of woman he wants to marry: one who is well-bred, reserved, genteel, and most definitely not a Scottish actress intent on blackmailing his father. In other words, his future wife will be the exact opposite of Grace MacEachin. The "Scottish Songbird" may have all of London dangling after her charms, but Richard refuses to be swayed by Miss MacEachin's looks when he listens to her ridiculous story about his father and uncle ruining her father's life. To prove her wrong, Richard agrees to accompany Grace to Scotland where he will hear what her father has to say. It should have been a simple trip...

Grace doesn't trust any man, but she is relieved when Richard Lynsted agrees to hear her father's story. She's just one coach ride away from being reunited with her father and putting her past behind her. Too bad that one coach ride is a long one, made interminable by the priggish man accompanying her.

But Richard isn't as stuffy as he seems. And Grace is more than just a beautiful woman. And someone doesn't want them to make it to Scotland alive. With danger bringing two seemingly opposite people together, will Richard and Grace learn that they do, in fact, have more in common than they first believed? Or will new fears and past hurts keep this newfound couple from taking their blossoming romance all the way to the altar?

Get ready for one of the sweetest, most charming romances of the year with The Marriage Ring. Ever since Cathy Maxwell introduced the indomitable Grace MacEachin in In the Highlander's Bed I've been waiting for Grace's story. To my great pleasure, The Marriage Ring was everything I could hope for. Grace is still the strong, caring beauty I first grew attached to and she meets her match in Richard. Richard may be a big bear of a man, but he's got a soft heart. Both he and Grace share a common yearning for approval and what I adored about their story was the two of them learning what really mattered in life and finding the acceptance they so sought where they least expected it - from one another.

The Marriage Ring is the third book in Ms. Maxwell's Scandals and Seductions series but it stands all on its own. Fans of Ms. Maxwell's will likely delight, as I did, in the brief references to Nick (Richard's cousin) and Fiona (Grace's friend), who fell in love in the first Scandals and Seductions story, A Seduction at Christmas. I finished The Marriage Ring utterly contented with Grace and Richard's romance. It was fast-paced, entertaining, and at times absolutely melted my heart. I cannot wait to see what Ms. Maxwell has in store for readers in her next sure-to-be-fabulous book!

Review

"The three function model is a profound bedrock to provide footing for a medical communication course. It is simple at its most basic level and applicable to any discipline or subspecialty a young trainee would decide to pursue. Thus, it is widely applicable to medical school educators…the model is equally applicable to graduate and post graduate level educators and clinicians who want to advance their skills. There are few medical texts out there that can have such wide appeal and effectiveness. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to any medical educator who has a need to both learn and teach patient-physician communication."

-Joseph S. Weiner, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Medicine, Hofstra North Shore LIJ School of Medicine

"In over 20 years of teaching interviewing skills to medical students I have consistently relied on The Medical Interview: The Three Function Approach as a key resource. The combination of humanism, intellectually rigorous biopsychosocial perspective, and clinical pragmatism makes it a uniquely relevant and accessible text. Students have no trouble grasping and applying the three-function structure as a tool for observing, critiquing and improving interview skills in themselves and their peers during our observed interview sessions. The introduction of motivational interviewing concepts in the third edition is a welcome addition."

Great Book! Provides techniques to talk to different kinds of patients.
By MRK
It is much easier to learn the Krebs cycle than learning how to talk to patients.

This book is a great reference. It helps you structure your approach to different kinds of patient. From the ones, you think, are "great and compliant" patients but you cannot seem to get his/her blood pressure or blood sugars under control; to the ones you want to run away from whenever you see them on your schedule.
The book provides core principles on the the usual clinical scenarios, from obtaining a good history & physical, to providing a diagnosis, to discussing treatment options and following up on the treatment plans.

It also provides very difficult clinical scenarios, like dealing with an angry patient or giving a bad diagnosis, and even giving bad news to a family member.

You can easily master Bates' ;-) Learning how to understand and approach people in real life, clinical situations is not easy. The book provides basic knowledge, concrete tools/techniques to communicate with patients effectively.

Widely applicable, highly successful, broadly used teaching model
By Joseph S. Weiner
The three function model is a profound bedrock to provide footing for a medical communication course. It is simple at its most basic level and applicable to any discipline or subspecialty a young trainee would decide to pursue. Thus, it is widely applicable to medical school educators. At the same time, one can go into each of the three functions of a medical encounter as deeply as desired or as is necessary. This makes the model equally applicable to graduate and post graduate level educators and clinicians who want to advance their skills. As time is so precious in every patient interaction, so is the need to master the broad skills that can help us maximize our relationship with the patient, the elucidation of the issue at hand and the personalized approach that can educate, motivate, align the patient and family with the physician.

I have used this book to both advance my learning and my teaching of medical communication skills. The book serves as the basis for the four-year curriculum I co-direct in Interpersonal and Communication Skills at the Hofstra North Shore LIJ School of Medicine. Of note, the first graduating class of this medical school, while in their second year - a year highlighted by basic and clinical science - took a vote on the most influential concept they learned during their first two years of medical school. They decided that it was 'Function One - Build the Relationship with the Patient and Family.' There are few medical texts out there that can have such wide appeal and effectiveness.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to any medical educator who has a need to both learn and teach patient-physician communication.

Sincerely yours,
Joseph S. Weiner, MD, PhD

Macro Markets: Creating Institutions for Managing Society's Largest Economic Risks (Clarendon Lectures in Economics), by Robert J. Shiller

Arguing that we have largely inadequate financial markets, dealing with relatively small risks, Robert Shiller makes a unique set of proposals for marketizing the biggest economic risks faced by society today, risks that really matter to most people. The new markets could diminish the impact of international economic fluctuations and reduce the inequality of wealth. He proposes new international markets for claims on national incomes, on components and aggregates of national incomes, and for property such as real estate, and argues that these markets might dwarf our stock markets in their activity and significance. He challenges the widespread presumption that any such new market would be infeasible, by offering solutions to technical problems of measurement and settlement. There are proposals for implementing markets in perpetual claims and a substantial section on the construction of index numbers for use in settlement in the new markets.

Review

"[A] terrific book....Fresh, provocative, well written, and well argued. [Recommended] not only to financial and macro-economists, but to the larger economic community interested in the character and costs of business cycles."--Journal of Economic Literature

"The book, unique in its approach...offers an unusual combination of passionate advocacy with precise theoretical reasoning....This excellent book does more than provide a good treatment of some self-contained and specialized questions. It is also likely to initiate a research program. For what Shiller has done is to imagine a sometimes surprising and unfamiliar world in which risk-hedging and risk-spreading markets, while not necessarily complete, are at least a great deal more complete than they are at present."--The Economic Journal

"A brilliant new book that I highly recommend."--Peter L. Bernstein, Journal of Portfolio Management

Great in theory...but we need a futures market for it to work properly
By Franz K.
This is a very practical nuts-and-bolts "How to save the economic world". Macro institutions are neccessary to avoid various prisoner dilemma decision issues.

The UN, World Bank, IMF and a few others attempt to carry this mantle, and they do not really execute, and for the same reason - national interest always overides collective interests.

With regards to environmental issues, Shiller's proposals in this text would be quite good at addressing the current conflicts that exist in formulating an agreement.

In the end, however, the best voting and pricing machine is the market. If we price carbon in the marketplace and limit its release, market prices will reflect all known information about carbon.

The Samurai Diet: The Science & Strategy of Winning the Fat Loss War, by Nate Miyaki

Can you achieve outstanding fat loss and physique enhancement results while simultaneously improving overall health and wellness?

Is there a sustainable approach that will allow you to maintain a year-round six-pack, without compromising your health, sanity, or ability to function in the real world?

Is there a functional plan that will allow a busy, working professional to look more like a fitness model and less like the average Y2K American, without having to throw away their career goals, live like a professional athlete, or have their life revolve around food?

The answer is yes. Will it be magic-pill/infomercial easy? No, but with the right strategies and practical application, it is possible.

Many bodybuilders and fat loss enthusiasts will follow extreme measures to attain a ripped physique -- unknowingly disrupting normal metabolic and hormonal functioning, and ultimately compromising long-term health.

At the same time, there are many Paleo/Low Carb eaters that seek to improve biomarkers of health, but lose out on the physique enhancing benefits of scientifically researched, modern sports nutrition principles. Despite consistent exercise and healthy eating patterns, they are unable to attain the lean, sculpted physique they desire.

The truth is that with a more informed approach, you don't have to sacrifice one goal to achieve the other.

The Samurai Diet makes use of Bruce Lee's philosophy: research your own experience, absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is essentially your own.

The Samurai Diet pulls the best principles from Paleo Nutrition, Sports Nutrition, Bodybuilding & Fitness Nutrition, the Traditional Japanese Diet, Intermittent Fasting approaches, and research from university labs and peer-reviewed research journals across the globe.

The Samurai Diet combines evolutionary theory, scientific research, and practical experience (as a natural bodybuilder, fitness model, and physique enhancement coach) to unveil a hybrid plan geared towards simultaneously achieving your two main goals: improving health AND improving appearance.

  • The major problems with the average, Y2K American Diet.
  • What foods to eat and what foods to cut out in order to maximize fat loss, including the science behind why.
  • Why most foods marketed as "health foods" are not that great for fat loss.
  • How public policy and traditional nutritionists are influenced by major food refining industries, and why you will never optimize body composition following "standard, accepted" advice.
  • How exercise changes the way your body processes nutrients for 24-48 hours, and why the diets of active populations should be different than those of sedentary populations.
  • Why one-size-fits-all, universal diet programs or nutritional dogma don't work. Targeted recommendations need to be based off of a person's current status and goals.
  • The difference between treating sick populations with specific medical conditions and advising athletes with elite physique enhancement or performance goals.
  • Why low carb diets may be the absolute best approach for some demographics but disastrous for others.
  • The health and physique enhancement benefits and drawbacks of both dietary fat and carbohydrates.

  • How extreme calorie cuts can disrupt normal metabolic and hormonal functioning, lead to huge weight rebounds, and a lifetime of yo-yo'ing.
  • Why drastically restricting carbs during periods of intense, anaerobic training can lead to a chronic catabolic environment, cortisol overdominance, muscle loss, stubborn fat, and the "Skinny-Fat" Syndrome.
  • How dietary variables can affect hormones such as testosterone, growth hormone, cortisol, and leptin.
  • The science and psychological factors involved in deciding your optimal meal frequency pattern.
  • Why food combining practices and the satiety index are just as important as the glycemic index.
  • The difference between essential nutrients and energy nutrients.
  • How BOTH low carb, healthy fat AND lower fat, good-carb based diets can be used to effectively drop body fat.
  • The science, evolutionary theory, and social factors behind why eating the majority of your calories/carbs at night can be one of the most effective and sustainable approaches for real world fat loss.
  • The problems with chronic "dieting" and why periodic cheating, feasting, over-feeding, or carb-loading can be beneficial for fat loss.
  • Learn why you must understand and use the sacrifice/reward pattern on both a daily and weekly basis.
  • The reasons we store fat BESIDES caloric excess.
  • High calorie, low satiety, nutrient poor foods vs. low calorie, high satiety, nutrient dense foods.
  • Why you should not "drink" calories.

A Solid Start for a Writer
By A VFF
"The Samurai Diet" title is misleading - this book is much more than an eating plan. It's a well written and comprehensive guide to what's current in fitness nutrition. Miyaki covers the good and bad in paleo to sports nutrition to the latest resurging diet trend, Intermittent Fasting, and does so in an engaging way, sprinkled with quotes from Bruce Lee and samurai related books. He also recommends what foods to avoid and what's ok to have as well as general nutrition advice.

What makes Miyaki different from most fitness writers I've read is he advocates a moderate approach to carb intake vs the current "all carbs are bad for you" trend. The Samurai Diet is based off what he says is a traditional Japanese diet - 3 meals with an emphasis on protein and a staggered split of moderate and light carbs such as sweet potatoes and vegetables, respectively. Giving examples of how low carb and extreme diets, while effective, can also cause issues (lethargy, depression, insomnia, etc.) he argues a moderate approach to carbs is more beneficial since that can help in exercise recovery, building muscle, and in some cases lower body fat faster than following a strictly low carb diet. But he doesn't completely dismiss low carb diets, since he thinks it's a better fit for more sedentary folks given their lower amounts of activity.

Though a relative newcomer to the fitness writing world, Miyaki's been around the block and it shows. Drawing from his time as a trainer/nutritionist and overall fitness lifestyle/education, he quotes numerous published reports and studies to back up his assertions, which is a refreshing change from other authors who write "numerous studies say..." then don't quote any of them. He also has a knack in simplifying concepts, such as an example in "Lesson #1: Exercise Cannot Make Up for a Poor Diet" where he shows how someone who eats ice cream then thinks they're burning those calories by working out harder isn't accomplishing much. He talks about how the ice cream and intense exercise can cause negative effects in the body and it's all easy to understand.

The book is broken up into sections with short chapters where he addresses different nutritional/fitness topics. The chapters run from one to several pages long, so they're a fairly quick read and it's an easy book to put down and pick back up again if you're busy.

If you're looking for this book to be your diet savior, you might be disappointed. While Miyaki does advocate the Samurai Diet for active people and a paleo type lower carb intake for people who are sedentary, he also states what works well for one person may not for someone else and a lot of this can be "learn as you go" as you figure out what your body will or won't tolerate foodwise (which is something I've learned as well from personal experience).

There are some things I'd have liked to have seen:

1. More on supplements: Miyaki says supplements aren't a fast track to a great body vs how one eats and exercises and he's right. He covers staples such as green tea, caffeine, fish oil and Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) but I was disappointed there wasn't additional supplements like magnesium or creatine, which have been used in the fitness world for years with positive feedback.

2. Personal stories from his time as a trainer/nutritionist: I think talking about lessons learned from himself or his former clients (aside from an occasional mention) would make for more relatable examples. The science snippets might be nice from a 'published authorities back up what I say' point of view, but there were times I'd glaze over them.

3. Leeway in substitute foods: In "Book II: Cut Down Your Enemy", Miyaki advocates eliminating different food groups such as dairy. While he's correct in how these groups can hinder one's progress, he doesn't cover what would be good substitutes in some case. The negative examples he uses for dairy are based on cow's milk and doesn't cover other types out there like goat's or almond milk. I discovered I had a sensitivity (bloating, etc.) years ago to regular (cow) milk but have no issues with using goat's or almond milk and I know others who are the same way.

4. Miyaki's columns have shown he has a great, if not offbeat, sense of humor. He might have been advised to keep it straight since this is his first book, but I think some dashes of humor here and there would've added more of a personal touch.

If you're a regular reader of Miyaki's columns, there's nothing here he hasn't written before but he does elaborate quite a bit and I'd still recommend buying the book. I learned some new things and think of it as a handy reference. If you're a beginner to the fitness lifestyle, this would make an excellent starting point and I've told a trainer I know to pass word of this book on to his clients. For $6 (cheaper than most meals) this book is a steal.

It's been working
By Mark S. Schoon
I'm 57, haven't been very active for a couple of years, had gotten very out of shape and a bit overweight (6'1", 210lbs). That was about 6 weeks ago. I've started becoming much more active doing something almost every day. Walking briskly, strength training 3-4 times a week, swimming, some cycling, all of which has helped, but what's made the biggest difference is following the advice in this book. I like that it's well researched, that at the end of the book he's not trying to sell his special supplement or exercise equipment or whatever. In fact he advocates taking it all with some skepticism and doing some experimenting for what works in your own circumstance.

The biggest lesson I've learned is how important food choice is and how that impacts everything that follows. I dropped gluten, dairy, and virtually all processed foods, and have been scaling back on grains. This morning, I was 192, I sleep better and I feel great. Best of all I'm not on a diet, but have discovered a new understanding of how to eat to meet my goals that will carry me through in the long run. It's literally changed my life.

Excellent resource
By BPM
This is a very good book on how 'physique athletes' diet to get very lean, delivered in a what I'd imagine the author would agree is a gimmicky but entertaining manner. The whole samurai angle is, let's be honest, pretty silly. I promise that samurai were not particularly concerned about maintaining a single digit body fat level. It does add a lot of entertainment value to what is very clear, straightforward and effective information. As someone who's been eating Paleo/Primal for many years, but never got super lean, this was exactly the information I needed. Some folks have mentioned that they would like meal plans but it's made clear in the book that you need to figure out your own meal plans- the whole point is your diet is deeply dependent on your current body composition, activity levels and so on. I do disagree with him when he says that food scales are overkill- my little $20 scale really helped me to understand what a serving of 50 grams of protein looks like, for example (more chicken breast than you may think). I don't use it much any more but starting out it was super useful.

I give 4 stars instead of 5 only because probably half of the book is italicized copy and paste text from dozens of studies. I would bet that the vast majority of people reading this book don't need to read 5 pages of a study's result in detail concerning lipid levels and hormone measurements- we just want a 2 or 3 sentence summary of the results, and throw the rest in an appendix for the technically inclined. Other than that it's a great book and highly recommended.
