This book is very coherent in its exposition of ideas and reads almost like an "authored" book. There are some redundancy in explanation of ideas by different authors, but proper references are made to other chapters in the book (that were written by other authors) for a complete explanation.

You can find a self contained explanation of Extended Kalman Filter, Unscented Kalman Filter, and Particle Filter as applied to machine learning, where you have some parameter values to be automatically identified such as in weights for neural networks.

My interest was primarily in Unscented Kalman Filter and the book was detailed enough so that I could code my own Unscented Kalman Filter and reproduce some examples in the book. In the process, I had to look up on the internet on Robbins-Monro Algorithm because the book lacked a detailed explanation about it even though it was a suggested method for updating innovation covariance. Overall, the explanations were clear, and it has been a smooth process from reading this book to applying the algorithms to my own problem at hand.

Individual con tributions are well written and fit to gether unusually well to form a coher ent treatise. Given the key role of instrumentation in the dramatic pro gress of 20th-century astronomy, the volume provides an exciting peek at the next two decades. Readers do not need advanced training to enjoy this work, although some prior knowledge of as tronomy and physics might be useful. Berry's book contains detailed in structions for amateurs wishing to con struct small optical telescopes. It pro vides photographs and plans for five specific telescopesfour reflectors of differing sizes and styles and one re fractor. Several other chapters explain telescope construction and general use. the best single book today for making your first scope!

If you can only have one first book on making your own telescope this is it! I have been an active amateur astronomer for almost 35 years and I wish this book had been out in 1965 at the time I first got interested in astronomy. Richard Berry when he was editor of "Astronomy", and "Telescope Making" (now sadly defunct),was the first to popularize John Dobson's Sidewalk Telescope design now simply known to amateur astronomers everywhere as the "Dobsonian". In this book he leads you in how to build several excellent telescopes from parts that are easily available from hardware/lumberyard sources everywhere. He shows and explains 5 different example projects, 4",6",10" Newtonians on Dobson mounts, how to mount a refractor on a Dobson type mount, and even one equatorial mount made of plywood and hardware parts. The projects are well illustrated and explained. He gives you a good overview of commercially available parts and commonly used eyepieces. But beyond being just a simple how-to project book he gives an explanation of telescope history and and basic optical theory. I wish I had his well illustrated chapter on "Home Brewed Optics" when I made my first telescope mirror. While not a substitute for having a copy of Allyn Thompson's "Making Your Own Telescope", or Jean Texereau's "How to Make a Telescope" which deal mainly with the making of the primary mirror, it would have tied together concepts I did not understand well at the time. When I'm asked while doing public star parties (and you always will be while doing that kind of thing)"what kind of telescope should I get" or "where can I find out how to build one these things (the telescope)", I always recommend this book. In fact I now always bring a copy to these occasions so they can get the title and author correct as well as browse thru it. You can light a number of fires that way.

I built a telescope from plans in this book

I am no craftsman, but I used one of the plans in this book to build a telescope - not a toy, but a real astronomical telescope that I use frequently. Berry includes plans for 4.25", 6", and 10" reflectors and for a 6" refractor.
The plans are quite complete, and the process of construction is given in detail. Berry devotes some space to mirror grinding, but I chose to buy my mirror, so I can't comment on his instructions. He also provides an introduction to astronomical observing, which I found helpful.
Berry's writing is clear and his tone is encouraging and enthusiastic. I recommend the book highly.

Excellent!

This is the best book out there for the beginning telescope maker. It is the book I used to build my first 6"; without it I would probably not have built a telescope at all.
Berry provides detailed and complete instructions for several telescopes. His writing is easy to understand and very clear, and he gives some very important practical advice about building and observing.

About the Author
About the Authors Linda Holtzschue graduated Phi Beta Kappa in art history from the University of Rochester. She taught for many years at Parsons School of Design where she also served as an Assistant Dean. She maintains a private interior design practice in New York City and teaches at The Fashion Institute of Technology. Ms. Holtzschue is the author of Understanding Color: An Introduction for Designers, published by John Wiley & Sons in 1994. Her work has been featured in the New York Times Magazine. Edward Noriega is a Cooper Union graduate. He has taught art and design courses at Cooper Union, The Fashion Institute of Technology, and Parsons School of Design. He is currently the Assistant Chair of the Digital Design Department and Director of the Freshman Year Computing Program at Parsons. He has lectured throughout the United States and internationally on the Freshman Digital Design program. Mr. Noriega also maintains a graphic design studio in New York City.

Green, MPS, RHIA, FAHIMA, CPC is an Adjunct Professor in the Health Information Management Department at Mount Wachusett Community College, Gardner, Massachusetts. Ms. Green has also held the position of SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Physical and Life Sciences Department at the State University of New York, College of Technology, Alfred, from 1984 through 2016. An active member of the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), Ms. Green has been recognized both for her excellence in teaching and for her significant contributions to the Health Information Management profession. She has earned numerous awards, including the State University of New York Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching, Alfred State College's Alumni Association Teacher of the Year, Who's Who Among America's Teachers, and the FORE Triumph Educator Award from the AHIMA. Ms. Green is a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), a Fellow of the American Health Information Management Association (FAHIMA), and a Certified Procedural Coder (CPC). She earned a BS from Daemen College and an MPS degree from Alfred University. Ms. Green has authored three successful books related to coding and health information.

Highly recommend.

This book was required for a college class I was taking. I never actually read any of it, but I was surprised to find that I could sell it back to the Barnes and Noble on campus for almost three times higher than I bought it for. I religiously bought this book every semester and sold it back to the bookstore until I graduated.

I didn't pass the class, but my whiskey was basically free for the rest of my college career. Highly recommend.

Match the Title, Good to Go.

I'm taking Intro to Statistics. The custom title (paperback, university name on the cover, only $120 new or $90 used at the campus book store) is missing two chapters from this hard cover version, and the remaining pages in the custom edition weren't even re-numbered to close the gap left by the missing chapters. Weird. This book was identical except for its being complete, and it's a hard cover version. There were a few ink marks on some of the pages, but not much. It set me back $1 for the book and $4 for shipping.

This book is OK, but very overpriced. It's heavy with glossy pages, and is a real back breaker in a school bag. The examples are ok, but don't explore concepts very far or in depth. I often found myself thinking, "what about this case, or what about this case?" and couldn't find any satisfactory answers. It's definitely an introduction book to stats.

It has answers to odd-numbered problems in the back. The solution manual for this is not great, and only covers questions the even-numbered problems. How this makes sense, I have no idea.

It has some quick reference equations on the inside covers, which is definitely a nice touch. But save some money, buy it used. It is by no means a classic text.

The history and practice of traditional healing arts used by various Native American tribes, aptly set in a cultural framework that provides a fuller understanding of how such customs arose. Kavasch, an herbalist and ethnobotanist (Native Harvests: Recipes and Botanicals of the American Indian, 1979) and health writer Baar are convinced that the healing rituals and native medicinal plants described here are an untapped reservoir of help . Kavasch explains that Native American healing is focused on both spiritual and physical health, and is based on a connection with community and with the earth. Much of the tradition is organized around the cycles of life; thus the authors arrange their information by ``Birth and Infancy,'' ``Childhood,'' ``Puberty,'' ``Adolescence,'' ``Adulthood,'' ``Old Age,'' and ``Death, the Afterlife, and the Spirit World.'' I've always had the fantasy of becoming an apprentice to a gifted Native American medicine woman--that is until reading "American Indian Healing Arts" by E. Barrie Kavasch and Karen Baar, when my fantasy became a reality. This book is rich with history, accurate herbal information, great medicinal recipes presented in an easy to follow format. "American Indian Healing Arts" is wonderfully reflective of Native American spiritual practices especially in its attention to rites of passage and stages of life. The tender manner with which the information is presented is welcoming, encouraging, inclusive and heartwarming--bound to lead many an apprentice down the path of pursuing greater understanding of Native American medicine.

About the Author
Kim Scott is the co-founder and CEO of Candor, Inc. Kim has been an advisor at Dropbox, Kurbo, Qualtrics, Shyp, Twitter, and several other tech companies. Great book with lots of examples and practical guidance.

I've been at Google for 11+ years and much of what Kim talks about in the book resonated with me as a manager. This book as opposed to others I've read in the past has a ton of actionable guidance. I'm already looking for ways to apply many of the teachings from the book to my work. Especially the topics around Superstars and Rockstars hit home with me. Just today my team and I talked about how we could reward our Rockstars better. I also really like how Kim talks about the importance of being "centered" and how it's hard to be a good manager without being in a good place yourself.

Marshall B. Rosenberg, Ph.D. is the internationally acclaimed author of Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life, and Speak Peace in a World of Conflict. I love this book, but...

I spent $8.06 on this hard copy with my prime account only to find out that it is 1/6th of the book Living Nonviolent Communication: Practical Tools to Connect and Communicate Skillfully in Every Situation by Marshall Rosenberg. The 'Living NVC' book goes for $14.19 with Prime ($17.95 without) and also includes: 'We Can Work It Out', 'Being Me, Loving You', 'Getting Past The Pain Between Us', 'Raising Children Compassionately', & 'Practical Spirituality'. All of these titles go for around $8 with Prime. If you have any intention of buying more than one of these 6 titles consolidate and buy the 'Living NVC' book.

A good perspective on anger

Much of this is contained in "Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life," but this book does go into anger a bit deeper. It was very useful to me. It's not about suppressing anger, but finding the unmet needs underneath it, and actually resolving the cause of it. The idea that we can feel anger without seeing the other person as an enemy is very useful.

This book is worth its weight in gold. Marshall Rosenberg gives easy to understand guidelines for working with the basic energy of anger in order to develop the skill to liberate oneself in relationship with another who otherwise might be perceived as an enemy. Everyone benefits.
