LOVE the recipes, BUT....

I'm giving this 3 stars (neutral, in my opinion) because the recipes are missing ingredients and/or steps. When baking, this is critical! And there are at least two recipes missing things. The crepes call for water in the instructions but it isn't listed. For the blackberry chia muffins, adding almond milk is listed in the instructions but it's nowhere to be found in the ingredients list. This can absolutely ruin the recipe. I still have no idea how much almond milk to add and didn't realize until I was halfway through the recipe. Now, what to do?! I just find this annoying. A book that goes to print shouldn't have this many mistakes. Otherwise, I LOVE Laura. So I hate not being able to give this 5 stars. Such a bummer.

UPDATE: I tried adding 1 cup almond milk to the recipe 1/4 at a time. The muffins came out pretty awful. If anyone figures this out, please post the info. (Blackberry chia muffins)

Laura Miller is my favorite person.

Just got this book in the mail yesterday, but I have read through it all and I am so eager to try everything! I'm not fully raw but look forward to trying these inventive and creative recipes! I've been a follower of Laura's work on YouTube for quite some time and am only sad she didn't include her (cooked) vegan chilli recipe, because I love that one so much, I suggest looking it up on YouTube - it's so delicious and hearty! But I love her unique take on raw food, as it's not just raw veggies and fruits, she gets really creative with a multitude of ingredients I've never heard of before. I'll be strongly recommending this book to everyone I know for healthier dining and dessert options!

I wish I could give this thing more stars because it deserves so much more than 5 stars. Laura Miller makes vegan eating so easy and delicious it has been truly life changing. I had been on the fence for such a long time because veganism extremism seems to take over the vegan world and intimidate those who aren't as fanatical. Laura Miller is such a cool lady and a true inspiration. She is the kind of person you wish was your best friend and that reflects in her writing , her recipes and in her story. You'd be a fool not to get this book, it is worth it !

Empowerment rather than the opiate?

The word "Leadership" in the title of this book is the Trojan horse that suggests that those who are in or want to be in leadership positions order this book off the Internet and drag it within their mental and emotional gates. Reading it, we wake up to the fact that the leadership the authors speak of has nothing to do with (and everything to do with) leadership in the normal sense of the word. The key is the adjective that precedes it, i.e., "personal." The book is actually a presentation of a self-development methodology or spirituality of being and doing that consists of two principles (mindfulness and creativity) and six practices or steps for cultivating those principles.

The authors represent a training enterprise, Personal Leadership Seminars, LLC, whose programs are delivered by experienced interculturalists using the methodology described in the book. The methodology itself is a combination of humanistic psychology, spiritual disciplines and philosophia perennis that bloomed in the late 1960's and has continues as a subculture in the USA as well as abroad. There are no surprises here, just a well knit set of mental and emotional disciplines and an invitation to a community of support.

If not new, what is the currency of such training and a book about it? The key is, as the authors point out, practice. A bankruptcy of ethics and spiritual discipline as well as the deep desire for it has resulted in a search for fundamental well-being that has led many into extremes of religious fervor where self-immolation and Armageddon are seriously embraced and encouraged by the so-called political, religious, and military "leaders" of the day. So, Personal Leadership proposes an alternative set of spiritual practices aimed at bringing about awareness of self, one's internal and external environment and how the "others" live in them for us so that our responses are creative rather than destructive, real rather than stereotypical, affirming rather than conflictual.

We might say that "leadership starts at home" in the sense that enlightened leaders in politics, business and organizations will do well to have their personal act together if our world is to find its way out of the wars and destruction that much of its current leadership has presented it with.

But it is not only leaders who need personal leadership, in the sense that following the crowd and the demagogue is as much a part of the problem as are those who maladroitly direct the world scenarios. It is trite but true that people get the leaders they deserve.
So there is a set of values here that eschews knee-jerk certainties, "If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him!" The silver bullet is practice, practice, practice. Shakyamuni's dying words are reputed to have been, "Be a lamp unto yourselves."

Today's psychologically-honed expertise for economic and political manipulation is not going unobserved. Naomi Klein in her recent book Shock Doctrine how a runaway economic paradigm enables political and financial leaders to manipulate populations through fear and misinformation. Psychologist Clotaire Rapaille, in The Culture Code points out how people around the world live and buy as they do behaving according to predictable culture codes, largely driven by unexamined unconscious urges--the lizard brain. In other words, great careers and great fortunes are to be made if the blind can be encouraged to invite the blind to lead them, and are satisfied with the cake crumbs that fall from their masters' tables. Whether one blows the whistle on these practices or strives to make a buck off them, the effect is the same, more of the same, more of the same...

This book shows us a way of stepping outside the maelstrom. It is long overdue, particularly in the sense that the intercultural field has largely ignored psychological and spiritual factors in the development of intercultural competence in personal development. This negligence has to a great degree contributed to the irrelevance and ignorance of intercultural work for religious, now become political contexts.
Personal Leadership is evidence that the Buddha and the Tao and Fritz Perls are still pointing the way to enlightenment for those willing to take the steps to seek it. The payoff of personal leadership is in the experience itself, as the many personal accounts of self-engagement in the book illustrate--the book is worth reading for these alone. Coming to see the self and the world more directly and clearly is empowering, but there is no cheap grace. Fortunately we learn to drag ourselves kicking and screaming, leading ourselves to places in and life where we have not been before.

In a sense, this is a book that I didn't know that I was waiting for until I read it--an impetus to do more and better of what has made me do somewhat well in directing my own life and enriching and empowering those around me.

"Letting this book into my psyche" strongly reminded me that Moses, Jesus and Mohammed have left great spiritual traditions with powerful disciplines for development that unfortunately lay dormant but capable of being aroused even in those whose starting point is fundamentalist and authoritarian. Who will have the creative flash that will lead to taking greater benefit from sunnah, theosis, the Exercitia Spiritualia and the halakah etc., in those traditions that so many people feel themselves a part of, the empowerment rather than the opiate?

Must have if you play N C6

This is the best book on N-C6 that I am aware of. I started playing these lines as a kid because in my area this opening was popular. Meyers is a well known N C6 expert and I played against him and going over our game he convinced me that this may not be the best opening but it is hard to play against if you are not prepared. I have a lot of material on this opening and if you play these kind of lines then you must have this book. I like how it was organized and it is easy to read. It helped to bring my other material into focus. Meyers has his own book on N-C6 but this one is 10 times better.

bad, unappetizing book

as a 2000+ USCF player who specializes in 1.nc6 (and 1.b6) i am very disappointed with this book. first of all, the e5 nizmowitsch is not covered but thats still acceptable, but the author unfairly cowards away from 1.d4 nc6!? which is a fully playable defense ( in fact my first master scalp was with it!).Besides that, the author recommends some pretty dry recommendations that dont appeal to the true nimzo player

here is list of problems

- the book completely ignores 1.e4 nc6 2.nf3 d6 which is the heart of the nimzowitsch defense and instead recommends a positionally horrendous alternative dubbed "el columpio" which can easily be refuted by engines. there is even a line, where white sacs a pawn, to double BOTH blacks h and e pawns! how an IM can recommend that is insane.

- the book doesnt cover 1.e4 nc6 2.d4 d5 3.nc3 dxe4, i dont know what tree branch the uthor has been sleeping on, buts far from being on the border of refutation like he claims. after 4.d5 not only is ne5 compex but acceptable, but the simple nb8 5.nxe4 c6! almost immediately equalizes and its easy to play. his recommendation of transposing to the nc6 french inst bad but its contrary to our nimzo spirit!

-agaisnt c4, the author simple recommends, transposing to boring e5 lines, seriously!?

-in the advanced nimzowitsch, he completely neglects 1.e4 nc6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 bf5 and instead recommends the not as respectable f6!?. bf5 is the better alternative as played by nimzowitch himself and 3...ne2 is far from a refutation, and just undermines the better move.

-like a review above states, some lines are completely torn to shreds by a strong engines.

not all is bad, the coverage on 1.e4 nc6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 is actually well done and its a decent book if you want to learn the chigorin (although if you want to learn to only play that, morozevich book on it is better)but it fails to find a balance. not only is it plagued with dubious lines that are objectively questionable when better alternatives where available, but when the author can recommend combatative lines, he often shies away.

if you want to read a book on a good unorthodox opening with black, thats very well written, i recommend play 1.b6 by christian Bauer, but if you want to master the nimzowitsch defense specifically, stay away from this book.

Excellent chess book

I highly recommend this book to all those chess players who want a complete black repertoire in one book . You can play 1...Nc6 against anything White throws at you and let tactics then decide. The first part of the book( up to about page 93 ) covers the 1. e4 Nc6 lines . The next section (pages 94-186) is the Chigorin defense which is an excellent choice but requires much study. Pages 213-263 covers 1.c4 and 1. Nf3 . My rating has jumped a couple hundred points by studying this book along with my White repertoire book . Good luck !

A remarkably candid, courageous, and soul-stirring collection.

With the very conscious agenda to dismantle stereotypes and perceptions about Muslim women and love, Love InshAllah gives a glimpse into the richness, plurality, and self-actualization inherent within American Muslim women's love lives. It holds the enormous potential to astonish both Muslim and non-Muslim audiences, albeit for different reasons. This post is one Muslim woman's reaction to reading about her fellow Muslimahs' love lives in this remarkably candid, courageous, and soul-stirring collection.

Love, InshAllah, at first, brought me face-to-face with a glaring prejudice I have unconsciously created about what for me is fair game for love stories.

When Bollywood started to produce movies that involved more explicit love scenes, I remember my best friend, the least prejudiced person I know, saying "Aurgh, I don't want to see that!" I chuckled: "So, what, it's okay if white people do that onscreen?" She tried to explain what she felt: "No, but that's brown people. That's us!" Thanks to the media's disproportionate portrayal of what particular acts should look like or whom they should involve, having intimacy is being acted out by people of "our kind" can be temporarily disorienting for even the least ideologically prudish Indo-Pakistani Muslim ladies like myself.

I confess that, on some level, that's what I was feeling when I read Love, InshAllah. It's one thing to know, abstractly, that those stories are out there. Before reading this collection, I did know about gay Muslimahs, about the niqabis who have multiple sexual partners, about Muslim children having to live dual lives because they could not conform to their parents' standards. But it's one thing to have these faint blobs of abstraction floating around in one's consciousness. And it's quite another to be reading a succession of those stories by the women who own them. For reading such works constituted an experience I could never have readied myself for.

I, of course, mean that in the best way possible.

Being a single person who's been feeling a bit shortchanged in the love department lately, I did at times have to face the demon of loneliness while reading the stories. And being a Muslimah-which for me means having an inner universe that is shaped and conditioned by the moral tenets of the Islamic faith-means that the moral quandaries raised in some of those stories make reading them a gut-wrenchingly conflicted experience. Yet, ultimately, reading Love, InshAllah created a glowing, steadily increasing burn of recognition of myself in the stories as a whole.

The beauty of this collection lies in how pluralistic it is, and how any attempt to explain the experience of reading these stories will fail to do justice to this collection in its entirety. Therefore, I have decided attempt to group the stories based on my experience of reading them. These categories are far from perfect, but they help provide some insight into how varied the reading experience can get within the scope of such a collection.

1. Deceptively Traditional Stories: These stories moved me because they revealed the beauty of what might, on the surface, seem to be unappealing ways to meet a significant other. Aisha Saeed's "Leap of Faith" is a dream for any South Asian girl who's had to go through strangeness of having her parents play matchmaker. "Otherwise Engaged" is an endearing account of Huda Al-Marashi's yearning for a date with and formal proposal from the boy she was set up to marry.

2. Too Good to Be True Stories: Stories that seemed too good to be true to the point of irrelevance. Although I recognize that they were a necessary part of the collection and are as true as the other stories, they're not the kind of situations most Muslim women are lucky enough to be in. Ayesha Mattu's "The Opening" and Angela Collins Telles' "Love in the Andes" both involved meeting gorgeous non-Muslim men who ended up converting to Islam. Again, while I'm extremely happy for them and for all the women who have been so blessed, I'm too aware of the thornier issue of women who fall in love with good, worthy non-Muslim and are forced to choose between love and deen.

3. Stories that are Not for the Faint-hearted: This collection of stories are better skipped by those who are squeamish, especially about Muslim women. In Tanzila Ahmed's "Punk-Drunk Love," Taqwacore sensibility intersects with the heartbreak and the transience of intense passion in a way that that seared my heart. Najva Sol's "The First Time" recounts her coming to an understanding about her sexuality in a way that pulls no punches.

4. The Real Stuff of Married Life Stories: These stories dealt with what married life (as far as I can tell) is really made up of. Melody Moezzi's "Love in the Time of Biohazards" is a beautiful portrayal of true spousal devotion in the face of pancreatic complications. "Love at Third Sight" by Patricia M. G. Dunn provides much-needed lessons about what real love, in the context of marriage, is, and the kind of trials or uncertainty one might have to go through in order to actualize this form of love.

5. Self-Defining Stories: Rather than relegate these stories to some overloaded form of a "miscellaneous" category, I wanted to highlight some gems in this collection, freestanding entities that made impressions I won't easily forget:

Aida Rahim's "Brain Meets Heart" is a story about how she and her daughter found the right husband and father (who incidentally is none other than Hijabman!) for themselves. I felt that this story brings out the much-needed voice of the smart, independent, admirable Muslim woman who doesn't become any less of those things just because she happens to be a mother and a divorcee.
Nura Maznavi's "Last Night on the Island" I found to be a wonderful story not just for its plot and narration, but because it functions as a portal into a grander narrative about being single. To see this included in a collection of love stories was something I had not expected, and this act of inclusion deeply moved me.
"Sex by Any Other Name" is a wonderfully uncomfortable read that explores virginity, perceived ownership of such a virtue, and the complications and anxiety that result when these phenomena are continuously confronted.
Asiila Imani's story "Three" traces the usual journey of love towards an unusual and controversial form: polygny. Given that a considerable number of Muslim women hold Imani's perspective and have had experiences similar to hers, I was especially glad to see the inclusion of such a voice in this collection.
Suzanne Syeda Shah's "Kala Love" is a raw, powerful account of complex family relationships, a pronounced clash between first and second-generation immigrants, the trauma of assault, and redemption through faith and sex. Because there was not only redemption, but redemption through a worthy man, I feel that this story epitomizes what-to me-is the real stuff of romance stories.

When I look back at the climate that surrounded my education on love and sex, I am bemused by the skewed ways that women of my religious and cultural background learn about these things: the way we would devour romance novels, the ridiculous myths about female anatomy that would circulate the unmarried girls' side in dinner parties, the simplistically treated assumption that one transforms from being `innocent' to being someone who knows of these matters over the course of a wedding night. To realize that I made the transition from that background to being part of a Love, InshAllah post-publication world gives me a great deal of hope and self-affirmation. It is now, by virtue of this book, becoming a world I want to raise my daughter in.

At first I wasn't sure if should put myself through reading this book, thinking that it would only make me confront the demon of emotional loneliness. And to an extent, it did. Amazingly enough, however, by the time I reached the end, it had done the opposite. It instilled me with a sense of hope and empowerment I couldn't have gained in any other way. Although a little disorienting at first, it eventually lead me to breathing sigh after sigh of relief, knowing that my story-be it that of failed love, triumphant love, or singlehood-is part of a narrative that can never be conveyed simplistically, a narrative whose beauty comes from the plurality of experience and candidness about the places they come from.

This collection may be subtitled, "the secret love lives of American Muslim women," but this book brings those lives out in the open, making them secret no more. I applaud its honesty and its celebration of female sexuality from within the Muslim universe. And I hope it paves the way for more such works about Muslim women in other places and countries and other conceptions of intimacies, starting, perhaps, with Canadian Muslim women.

Unique yet relatable

I must admit that I was expecting some typically similar and sugar-coated
stories with cheesy endings (yawn). To my surprise, each story was
strikingly unique, heart-felt, and honest. Most importantly, the stories
were well-written and captivating. Once I started reading the anthology, I could not stop.

I never would have thought I'd so appreciate and enjoy the memoirs of all the contributors to this anthology...i'd recommend it all the 'manly men' who normally wouldn't give this book a second glance. Actually, most of the men in these stories make us look pretty darn good! And, of course, the women---they are compassionate, loving and brave to let us peek into their hearts.

What's wrong with the art of homemaking and being a loving wife?

Marabel Morgan wrote this advice book in 1972, around the time when one wave of the women's movement was cresting. There's a light smattering of quotes from biblical scripture, then it goes on to four parts. Organization Woman (Part I) takes the Charles M Schwab's $25,000 plan (prioritize your tasks) and lays out a plan for any women to get things done on time. Man Alive (Part II) looks at the delicate male ego and what a wife can do to restore it. Sex 201 (Part III) is about keeping the spice alive. Building Bridges (Part IV) shows how interaction within the family unit can influence children.

Books like this will always garner the venom and knee-jerk reactions from a particular segment of women. Even before they read the book, these same people will drag out economic inequality, oppression of women as homemakers, doormat policies all leading inevitably up to domestic violence. NOWHERE in this book does the author promote ANY of these ideas. What the book does do is to advise women who have ended up - either by choice or by circumstances - in the home on how to make the best of it. To excel in homemaking; to provide a nice place to return to; to look after and support your husband; to realize that in marriage, giving in is as important as taking; to show love to your children. Is all this really that bad?

Sure, there's the danger of the marriage going south and a wife ending up in the shoes of Terry Hekker. But that's a danger in any marriage. So why not start making lemonade?

I'm willing to bet that if the roles were reversed and all the advice was written for husbands...and the wife became the recipient of the attentive husband, this book would immediately be hailed as a must-read for all men.

Any advice book should be approached the way we treat high fashion: Take what you can use, water it down a little, and keep the rest in the back of the closet. No one can be expected to walk around in Saran Wrap to keep the hubby sexually enchanted, but rotating sexual turn-ons and outfits to keep the spark alive is a definite keeper.

I know this book experienced some raised eyebrows from the religious community when it came out, particularly the chapters concerning sex. Because we women having forgotten how to blush, we've had to rely on some unsubstantiated myth to hold on to our men. Miss Morgan shows that we need to put solid hard work into it. A marriage can stay together on conceptual ties like mutual respect, joint returns, and prenups, but heavens how boring it would all be! Still you could apply all that in addition to the advice given in this book. I would think any woman would want to have all the tools at her disposal.

Like Helen Andelin's book Fascinating Womanhood, the focus on men's fragile ego is a priceless piece of advice. I want to say if one were a fly-on-the-wall in a room where men are talking alone... but then I remembered, men rarely talk about their feelings. But compliment and admire any man, and you immediately see the gratitude in their eyes.

In this day and age when so many of us are complaining about how men are no longer men....Miss Morgan gives you the keys here. If men are no longer men, it's because WE are no longer women.

If You Can't Do It All, Start With Trying a Few

Marabel Morgan's advice was like a breath of fresh air. Feeling completely suffocated by a new marriage, a new baby, and no living mother to draw advice from, I needed to hear the message of this book. It doesn't advise women to be doormats. In fact, one of the most impowering section of the book spoke of being as organized as a multi-million dollar company. Stay-at-home moms and wives have tremendous responsibilties that often our society ignores. Accountant, housekeeper, cook, childcare worker, errand runner...a complete balancing act. And yes, your husband does want to come home to a loving wife and a sexy partner. Okay, you don't have to be a greeting Playboy bunny at the door and the Bible does not promote breast augmentation, but the idea of pleasing your mate is a privilage. Because you're organized and stay at home during the day to take care of business there, your family will have time in the evening to bond. Skip the idea of manipulating. Mrs. Morgan doesn't teach that. She simply shares that you will reap benefits naturally because you're more pleasant to live with. Read the book. I loved its basic principles.

A LOTTA GOOD STUFF HERE, BUT...

Forty-years ago, I was given this book by my fianc�. He was using Marabel Morgan as a spokesperson for him and for what he expected in a wife. Since I had a Cinderella Complex already--waiting to be rescued by Prince Charming--I didn't object to the basic theme of her book: submit, serve, obey, and lots of sex...at first. But as time went on, he became his own spokesperson. We weren't even married yet, and I was not even coming close to meeting his expectations. I tried but I failed and the engagement ended.

I just reread The Total Woman. I wasn't that far along into the book before I wanted to throw it out the window, take it out back and burn it, stomp on it...anything to vent my anger. But, instead I kept reading, and then I realized something. The inspiration, motivation, and passion behind this book was for a good reason: helping couples save their marriages. With biblical direction and Christian values, Ms. Morgan wrote a comprehensive how-to book, which, over the years, has saved and enriched many marriages--marriages that were headed to divorce court.

I'm only going to comment on the parts of her book that I agree with--things in any relationship that are important for it to be healthy, rewarding, long-lasting, and of course, happy. I'm not going to comment on the parts that advocate serving his every whim, turning all control over to him, submitting to every desire, and being an obedient servant...I mean wife.

Page 38: "Do you know that your personal happiness depends on the attitude you decide you will have?"

Page 50: "A man needs to be accepted as he is..." and "I need to feel accepted, too."

Page 58: "...respect, honor, esteem, adore, praise, enjoy, and admire."

Skipping over the sex part. Not going to comment on "sexual intercourse every night of the week," or "spray your sheets with sweet cologne," or the part about greeting him at the door naked and wrapped in Saran wrap or pink baby-doll outfits and fuzzy boots or the part about having sex pretending to be "a pixie or a pirate, a cowgirl or a show girl." Nope! Not going there. Everyone knows that sex in important in a marriage.

Page 133: "A woman expresses her love by words and expects words in return. A man expresses his love by actions... ." And "Understanding the one you live with and love with gives such freedom." And "A husband and wife must communicate if they hope to understand each other. There is no greater feeling than knowing you are understood."

Page 134: "Be a good listener."

Page 136: "Don't criticize or put him down." Of course, that's a two-way street.

Page 138: "Be sensitive to his moods." Ditto on what I said above.

Page 139: "Be interested in his interests." This is good as long as it's not disingenuous and short-lived.

Page 142: "Before you speak, think the problem through and put it into its proper perspective. An angry outburst can scar your husband's emotions and create barriers between you."

It's important to note that Marabel Morgan is writing this book for women. It's instructions on how to keep your man happy so he won't stray and do the nasty-nasty with the bimbo at the office. She also has a chapter or two on how to raise well-adjusted and happy children.

A note here: Mrs. Morgan wrote this book from the perspective of an upper-middle-class housewife with a responsible and hard-working and caring husband. She lived in a world that was disconnected from so many other American households. She talks about "the office" as if every husband goes off to the office in a suit and tie and is tempted by pretty, seductive secretaries. What about the men who are slackers, men who don't hold up their end of the responsibility? What then...Marble...I mean Marabel?

My fianc�, who was a Christian man with high morals and "good intentions" wanted to provide me with a manual on how to be his perfect little sweet princess wife.

I can only thank Ms. Morgan, because if it had not been for The Total Woman (I could never, ever be that woman, by the way) I would have married the wrong man. It took several attempts at love--I had to realize that I didn't need rescuing; I am a smart, independent, capable woman. I eventually got it right. I have won the "Best Mate Lotto." Life is wonderful and, thank goodness, I don't have to wear that pirate outfit any more.

Ninety-eight percent of animals are invertebrates, and 85 percent of habitable space is aquatic; both are little represented here, though the salticid spiders and honeybees make an interesting contrast to vertebrate vision... The final section, on evolution of the vertebrate visual system's structures and basic physiology, belongs first as a foundation. Nevertheless, the book is fascinating reading for the specialist in perception and the cognitive neuroscientist, though not the beginner. Summing Up: Recommended. Olga F. Lazareva is Assistant Professor of Psychology at Drake University. Her research concentrates on behavioral and neurobiological aspects of visual perception and relational learning in humans and nonhuman animals.

Toru Shimizu is Professor of Psychology at the University of South Florida. His areas of research include the neural basis of vision and cognition in animals.

Edward A. Wasserman is Dewey B. and Velma P. Stuit Professor of Experimental Psychology at the University of Iowa and coeditor with Thomas Zentall of Comparative Cognition: Experimental Explorations of Animal Intelligence (Oxford University Press, 2006). He is a member of the Delta Center at the University of Iowa, dedicated to the investigation of learning, development, and change. Wasserman's research has centered on learning, memory, cognition, and perception in humans and nonhuman animals.

Outstanding Book Regarding Ethics in Athletics

Mr. Simon demonstrated thorough research and thought provoking writing on the subjects of sport and athletics. It is a book that anyone involved in athletics (in particular, intercollegiate athletics) MUST read! Buy two copies--one to keep for your own personal library and one to lend to a friend who is involved in athletics. This book opened my mind to different aspects of sport and athletics. Simply a must read!!!
