The Victorian City

Having looked at the Victorian house, Victorian crime and Victorian leisure in previous books, the author now turns her attention to the Victorian city. In particular, London during the time of Dickens', using his journalism and novels to illustrate her own book. Judith Flanders makes an important point that today the word 'Dickensian' often refers to squalor - such as the term 'Dickensian conditions' - whereas in his own time the author was more often seen as convivial and often humorous. As anyone will know who has read any biography of the great man, what Dickens was, more than anything, was an observer of his city and his people. In this book, Flanders attempts to create a picture of London during that time and to show the differences and similarilities with now.

One of the main impressions I came away with from the book is that London was much busier then than our present time - if that is possible! When the author recreates the working day, it showed that even in the middle of the night people were trudging around, either going to work or returning from it. Another major difference is that most people walked fairly long distances to get to and from places. In her section about the city itself, she covers all elements, from the methods of transport, accidents, commuting and even what the roads were surfaced in. She presents a place of immense noise and bustle, with street hawkers, markets, music and crowds, in which many of the inhabitants complained of never having any peace from the constant roar of the streets.

Other sections of the book look at how people lived, enjoyed themselves and the city at night. I learnt that markets and public houses had to close during church services, something I had not been aware of before, and a whole host of other interesting and informative facts. London during Dickens' time was always on the move. As the population increased, slum dwellings (or rookery's) began to grow, with workhouses and prisons visible presences in the city. Poverty led to many ingenious ways to make things cheapest for the very poorest. Public houses had a 'saveall' to collect dregs from glasses to be sold cheaply, or given away, for instance. My very favourite was the fact that you could have newspapers delivered, or 'rent' them - if that was too expensive for you, you could rent the previous days paper for an even cheaper price. Still, the author looks carefully at the poverty and injustice Dickens' was famous for exposing and also looks at life expectancy, public water pumps, illness and epidemics and the links between crime and poverty.

London was not always so dark and depressing and her vivid descriptions of London at night, with public houses, theatres, street organs, parks and public spaces are fascinating. I have lived in London all my life, but was never aware of the work on Trafalgar Square, for instance, which went on for so long that hardly anybody could muster any enthusiasm when the lions were finally installed - only a handful of men witnessing they arrival in the capital. There are interesting digressions into royalty, food, street violence and fascinating accounts of public executions. For Dickens' his city was a place that encompassed all life, and leaving London and leaving life one and the same. Flanders does a wonderful job of recreating that time and of relating it always to Dickens' London and his work. If you have an interest in Victorian London or the work of Charles Dickens, this will be a must read. Lastly, I read the kindle edition of this book and it contained illustrations.

Encyclopedia of London streets in Dickens' day

I wish this book had a different title. It's all about life in and on the *streets* of Dickens' London. The author's purpose is stated in the Introduction: "to look at the streets of London as Dickens and his fellow Londoners saw it, to examine its workings, to take a walk, in effect, through the city as it appeared in Dickens' lifetime, from 1812 to 1870." We rarely get indoors.

Each chapter - almost each page - bristles with detail. This is a wonderful reference book. As a straight-through read, I found it challenging, because I was soon feeling swamped by the sheer amount of information. To fully process all of that I'll have to read it again, but only a bit at a sitting. That said, I enjoyed most her descriptions of the development of the city's infrastructure - streets, roads, lighting, sewers, the Embankment.

There's an encyclopedic knowledge on display in each chapter of this book, and much to learn. Few who visit today's London know that several rivers run through it, but have long been buried deep under its streets and buildings. I wasn't surprised to read the details of a devastating fire at the wharves, or of huge public gatherings for events ranging from said fire to the state funeral of the Duke of Wellington. It was a revelation, however, to learn of the elaborate public illuminations: public buildings, shops, and even private homes were adorned with gaslit decorations for the enjoyment of vast night time crowds, to mark special occasions. Those are just a few of the subjects Flanders examines; if I tried to touch on all of them I'd have to write an unbearably long review.

Throughout the more than 400 pages of text (there are about 100 pages of end notes), Flanders frequently ties the details of the present subject, with Dickens' life and works. This attention to her theme provides welcome relief from the feeling I sometimes had, that I was reading an encyclopedia.

Although I don't live there and can't visit often, one of my favorite things ever is to spend a day walking in London. Any book whose purpose is to explain what Dickens saw on his lifetime's worth of walks through London - night and day - has a permanent place in my bookcase. I'll be picking this one up again and again, for reference and for browsing. It's a bit much to read all at one go, though.

Well Done, Judith Flanders, Well Done..

Who hasn't a one point or another longed to go back in time to visit the actual place where a favorite author set his most popular works? I know that I have at various times want to go back to see the London of Charles Dickens, or to move forward a decade or two, the London of Sherlock Holmes. Since as far as we know time travel is not possible, I recommend Ms Flanders' book on the Victorian city as the next best thing (and probably a whole lot safer, as well).

Each chapter has a theme for our travel adventure -- food, water-borne diseases, transportation, the generally miserable lives of children put to work when they are hardly out of their nappies, street walkers, shop keepers, and royalty. The book is an excellent resource for the casual reader and the scholar alike, as Ms Flanders has included copious notes and a bibliography. The book did not have quite as many illustrations as I had hoped for, although there were some throughout the text. I have read other books that I think did a slightly better job of involving the reader more totally in the time period, such as "The Time Traveler's Guide to Elizabethan England", by Ian Mortimer. The Mortimer book had more of a laser-like focus on one particular subject per chapter, where Flanders sometimes seemed to go off on tangents. Both methods have their merits, and sometimes it is just a matter of what style appeals to the reader at a given moment.

At over 400 pages the Flanders book is a commitment of time, but, as is often the case in books of this type, it is possible to read a chapter or two, set the book aside for a few days, and then come back to it without losing the context. I know many people, including myself, who often read large non-fiction books in this manner, and this book in particular lends itself to that method. If the subject matter interests you, do not hesitate to dive right into this exploration of Dickens' London.

Riveting look at a forgotten episode of history.

This is simply one of the best books I have ever read, and I've been recommending it to people ever since I first read it. I've even been known to grab people in bookstores and convince them to buy it.
These are not 20th century people dressed in funny clothes. They are real, live, breathing 19th century people come to life. I think too many of us have read too many bad historical novels or seen too many Hollywood films to recognize the aura of truth when it appears.
The simple facts of Henry and Clara Rathbone's lives are interesting enough. Raised together as stepbrother and stepsister after his mother married her father, they fell in love, and had to battle social conventions to marry. They had the supreme ill fortune to be with President and Mrs Lincoln on that terrible night when the President was assassinated, and forever after Henry Rathbone was blamed for not preventing the murder.. His descent into madness and its terrible effect on Clara and their marriage is well presented.
In the end, what eventually happened to them is revealed. I found myself reading the last thirty or so pages with my mouth open in astonishment. I'd never heard of these two, and yet they were a footnote to history we should all know about.
Thomas Mallon is the rare writer who can bring an era to life. He puts us inside the minds and souls of the people who lived long ago. They are like us, and yet not like us. They grew up and came of age in a completely different world, and he shows us both their similarities and differences to us, to our time.

Innocent Bystanders

Last year I visited Washington DC for the first time. I walked for hours and hours. And I was charmed, as I never expected that I would be. Soon thereafter, I read Henry & Clara - a novelization of real people and events.

Henry and Clara Rathbone - two people who grew up together in the pre-civil war era. Henry went to war; was damaged by war. Clara fell in love - with Henry, with politics, with Washington. What would their story have been like without the war? By the time they came together in marriage, their interests and goals in life had diverged. Clara's interests drove them to Washington where she befriended the troubled Mary Todd Lincoln.

Most beguiling are the descriptions of Washington as a small southern town. Clara crossing the square in front of her house to the White House across the street; meeting up with Robert Lincoln in the park. The carriage rides and salons. In that time, the President and family lived in and were part of a neighborhood .

Look at any picture of a momentous event, of famous people. Who are the people in the background? The other people who were there? A hundred years from now, looking at a picture of the motorcade in Dallas, will we know that was Nellie Connelly in the car with the Kennedys? Highly informative & entertaining historical fiction

This is a great read for anyone interested in good literature, or history, especially for those who are civil war buffs. It is a wonderful period novel, giving the reader a good sense of the culture and society of the era. The characters are well developed and absorbing, paritcularly the intracicies and psychological complexities of Henry Rathbone and Clara Harris (guests of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln at Ford's Theater on that fateful night.) I found the subject highly intriguing and fascinating, the examination of the impact of Lincoln's assination on Henry and Clara as individuals and as a couple. There are many historical facts in this novel, and it is fun to sort out fact from fantasy. The novel is a complete offering, providing a great narrative, depth, social and psychological study, and suspense as well. I found it very difficult to put this book down.

How do you accept a box of valentine candy from a boy? In fact, how do boys fit into Universal Sisterhood -- or is there a Universal Humanhood? As in the earlier Alice books, Alice copes with life in her own way, and her answers to her endless problems are often funny and surprisingly right.

It is about fitting in with certain peers*

All but Alice was a great book to read. It is about when Alice wants a bulletin board, her ears pierced, and even joins two clubs-The Earring Club and the All-Stars Fan Club. She works at the Melody Inn for three hours and wants to be part of the "in" crowd at school.
Alice may act different in this book out of the other books, but I know how that feels. You act different when you are in a different and a snobbier club and then realize of how idiotic you were to people who didn't pick on you at all.
It is not like Alice picks on anyone in this novel, but it was cruel of her to embarrass her friend Elizabeth like that. One of the Three Handsome Stooges likes and picks on Alice a lot. Alice feels different and one of the Popular and the Beautiful people at her school.
But the truth is, Alice gets so sick of Brian (one of the 3 Stooges) picking on her. Even in one of the chapters, he puts her face in the snow for fun like it is funny. And on Valentine's Day, her ex-boyfriend Patrick comes over and gives her a big box of chocolates.
Alice didn't realize that she had to share them with him for some weird reason. So Lester tells her that and she reinvites him over.
Lester has a Woman Situation again! Loretta Jenkins (who works at his dad's store) likes him! Lester just wants to take a break from dating and concentrate on homework. Or, in other words, L-I-F-E. Meaning a "non-female-dating-crisis" life.
And turns out that Alice's dad goes out with her 7th-grade Language Arts teacher Miss Summers. Again. And he gives her a Vivaldi cassette. AND, turns out that Alice becomes herself again, kisses Patrick again (because he threw up on the bus and Brian told Alice to make fun of him when he comes back but she comes to the rescue and they talk and then kiss on the bus. Yep. Just like that!), and quits the Earring Club (I think) and the All-Stars Fan CLub.
The letter Alice wrote to a famous rock-star was very funny. Even though it was a joke, the person in charge of it mailed it to the star!
This was a good book for peoples out there who have trouble fitting in with the right people. Phyllis Reynolds Naylor is a great author and knows how to describe a junior-high girl's life today.
So if you're bored, then I suggest reading All But Alice.

Not as good as the other Alice books...

It's the winter of Alice's seventh grade year, and all she wants is to fit in. She joins an "Earring Club," but soon finds it rather monotonous to spend so much time shopping for and talking about mere jewelry. She also joins the All-Stars Fan Club, because all the popular kids are, and ends up writing fan mail to a rock star she doesn't even like.

Obviously, Alice's actions and reactions are typical of any junior high girl. The fact that she's always felt ostracized by the death of her mother when she was a preschooler only compounds Alice's need to fit in. However, Naylor has demonstrated her talent for taking simple concepts and making them into interesting, funny storylines in the other "Alice" books; this one just isn't up to par. Still, readers who enjoy the series will certainly want to read this book, simply for more Alice stories.

This book was pretty good, it didn't really have much of a climax, but it was a good book. The characters were well written, and she described the setting well. but what I liked was that even though this is from a series, you didn't have to read the ones before it to know what she was talking about. And if you have read the books before it, she isn't so repeatative that it gets boring.

In this book I didn't really have a favorite part. The entire book was really good - and it doesn't take forever to read.

Two story elements that Phyllis is great at, is how you preceive the characters. You can really see throughout the story how Alice's ideas and thoughts mature and differ from the beginning. She is also really good and letting you know what the theme of the book is. You don't have to think about it for three days to figure it out.

A gem for parents wishing to learn what to expect of their children as they grow

For both the newly becoming and experienced parent alike, this book is a gem for those wishing to learn what to expect of their children as they grow through developmental ages from birth to nine years. Of significant interest to those parents eager to prepare for a more all-rounded Baby-Impact developing baby, rather than simply a feed-and-grow Gymboree or BabyGym physical-activity based development, Schaefer and DiGeronimo provide a treasure box of tips and techniques for building a child's social, emotional interpersonal and cognitive skills. Guiding the reader through each of their twenty chapters using the same five component growth behaviour indicators, clustered into divisions of four age range stages (0-18 mths, 18-36 mths, 36 mths to 6 years, and 6 years to 9 years), the component sections of each age range include emotional health, cognitive development, family and peer relationships, personal growth, and character formation.

Beginning each stage with a brief extract from a `mother's diary', the empathy of the reader is quickly enhanced, as each relates typical observations of a child's natural growth and behavioural demonstrations from a parent's perspective. Schaefer & DiGeronimo would appear to have designed this `guide book' especially for parents who are having their first baby, and are much concerned with discussing infant and child development in the context of outlining normal achievable milestones, only thereafter hinting at ways for individual milestone enhancement and/or interventions with regards the same normative behaviours. For example, tantrums are excellently discussed, explained (and yes, baby tantrums are quite `normal' too !), with practical tips provided for coping/dealing with them, as and when they occur.

With the working parent also in mind, Schaefer & DiGeronimo also aim for this book to be both very functional and simple to explore. In this they surely succeed, and the reviewers believe that most parents will be able to readily acquire the general concepts of (and thus foster appropriate expectations concerning), the formation of normative human infant and child behaviour, whilst also gaining significant parenting advice. For those unable or unwilling to spend many hours reading the text from cover to cover, pay keen attention to the do's and don'ts sections of each chapter (which they label `parenting/consider' and `avoid' respectively). We thoroughly recommend studying the "avoids", (and listing them on your kitchen notice board !) for absolute gems of child-rearing wisdom, at least in the case of the majority of them.

For those with the leisure and luxury to more deeply appreciate the rationales underlaying their advice, Schaefer & DiGeronimo provide further references to the more technical/scientific literature, and occasional additional content concerned with the theoretical and academic basis of their claims. This might require an above average level of knowledge in order to be fully appreciated, though their inclusion of `science to take home' sections will inform adequately for most readers. All told, this book is far more accessible and informative than most previous volumes with similar titles, and will thus suit the parent looking for a well-written and balanced account of what they might expect (and when), from the normally-developing child. One gripe for some readers might be felt in reading the rare occurrence of the occasional Christian-ethic undertone driving some of the moral-development sections, but the discerning parent can simply replace the terminology as appropriate to their own faith(s) - the advice is nonetheless pretty sound. And, if uncomfortable with the seemingly negative advice of a "don't" - remember that an `avoid' can always be changed to offer the same advice in the positive sense as a `do' (by simply avoiding the word "avoid", and remembering the latter exemplar part of the sentence only!). Enjoy, and be honest with yourself and your child(ren), this book is a gem, as can be every developing baby when watched closely over their formative years, with such knowledge to hand as this book provides.

As a new parent, I have found this book helpful - especially since I haven't spent a lot of time around other children. It provides great suggestions on optimizing your child's development & helps parents have a sense of what is normal and what to expect during different phases. I like how it is written in a somewhat "text-book like" style and not anecdotally like many parenting books.

Goldsmith and Hildyard, with examples from throughout the world, demolish the common justifications for large dams. They advocate traditional irrigation as environmentally sound and economically beneficial. Western US water history and issues -- a classic must-read

This 1986 tour de force examines water and dams in the mostly arid Western US. Topics addressed in detail include, but are not limited to, the Army Corp of Engineers, Bureau of Reclamation, California Aqueduct, California Water Wars, Central Arizona Project, Colorado River, Grand Coulee Dam, Glen Canyon Dam, Hoover Dam, John Wesley Powell, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Mono Lake, Ogallala Aquifer, Owens Valley, Teton Dam, and William Mulholland.

Underlying the encyclopedic scope of “Cadillac Desert” are two basic themes.

First, the settlers lured to the arid West by the railroads and the US Federal Government in the 19th century needed cheap water to support agriculture on their 160 acre parcels of land, and also for their growing cities such as Los Angeles. Cheap hydroelectric power was often a secondary need, essential to pumping water. This need was met by projects of the Bureau of Reclamation and the Corps of Engineers. The projects were generally promoted by local congressmen, who supported each other’s projects. In the long term this endeavor has been subsidized by US taxpayers since return revenues from the projects have generally fallen fall far short of plan.

Second, the projects and dams have been an escalating source of controversy. For the most part the projects have not been economically justifiable, especially the irrigation projects, and especially the more recent projects. Also, the dams have created lasting problems -- salination of irrigated soil; silt accumulation behind the dams; environmental devastation to streams, salmon fisheries, and migratory birds; an overstretched US Federal budget, etc. Cheap hydroelectric power has also enabled groundwater pumping which is depleting aquifers. The taxpayer subsidized benefits of cheap water have often gone to large corporate agriculture, not the small farmers for whom the water was intended. By the later part of the 20th century the public sentiment had largely turned away from building ever more dams, and indeed toward removing some of the existing ones.

The individual chapters of “Cadillac Desert” are often mesmerizing, instilling a sense of outrage in the civic and history minded reader. The chapter on the 1976 Teton Dam failure is a great example. If the leaders and promoters had thoughtfully considered the economics of the dam, or the geology of the site, the dam would never have been built in the first place. But built it was and fail it did. The spectacularly devastating failure is now used as a case study in engineering courses, providing an example of mistakes at all levels and by all of those involved.

While Reisner does seem long winded at times, it is worthwhile staying with “Cadillac Desert” to the end. On one hand, it provides many interrelated perspectives on water and the West. It also ends on a somewhat positive note as the many constituencies involved seem to be converging on a more rational approach to future water usage in the West.

MOST ILLUMINATING!!! A fascinating read!!

Absolutely fascinating. I lived in California for some 34 years and had no idea as to the history of how Los Angeles got it's water, other than knowing that a good portion came from the Colorado River. This book is thoroughly researched, and deals not just with California but with the water problems and development of the entire U.S. arid West. I had no idea as to the building of the great (and then not so great) dams starting in the late 20's early 1930s, starting with Hoover Dam. Also fascinating treatment as to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the competition with the Corp. of Engineers, and the Congressional pork barrel system that fueled the building of more and more dams and water projects, necessary or not. AND one wonders what will happen as the dams eventually silt up even as the population of cities such as L.A., Phoenix, Tuscon, Denver increase exponentially, as they have and continue to do. Indeed, when I moved to Calif. in 1970 the state's population was about 19 million; today it is about 38 million, DOUBLE that!! And Southern Calif. is basically an arid or at best a semi-arid desert!! This book was written in the late 1980's\early 1990's; one can only surmise how the author would be talking about the extreme Calif. drought now in it's 4th year. Calif gets much of it's water from 'snow-packs', from the Sierra Nevada to the Rockies (which feed the Colorado River). The CA Governor recently stood on bare ground up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and said he should be standing on 5 feet of snow!!! Yet, as the author points out (and I observed living in So. Calif.) the only thing grown in So. Calif. is no longer orange groves, but housing developments (usually in my opinion rather noxious with their same tile roofs, and built 10 ft apart). And they are still going up by the droves on every hill and valley!! The ultimate question is where is the water going to come from to support all this, especially with the effects of climate change, now thought to be at least in part responsible for the current extreme drought??? Anyway, fascinating book (not a short read, for sure) and I learned much as to the development of California and the West. It's all about WATER!!! Harvey (p.s.: I now live back East).

Water 101 - what all water citizens in the West need to know about the big Scam

Première lessons in Western Water. It is all a scam to take tax payer dollars and perpetuate the lies at the foundation... Trillions of dollars down the drain for unsustainable and unnecessary water infrastructure. Cadillac Desert is dated, but the corruption underlying the premises of water in the western US remains as distorted now as was then. And the wasteful practices are accelerating! The stench is prevalent from the US Gov all the way through the nice little local water district. This book isa call to mobilize, yet, the chosen path has been to keep shoveling more money on a fundamental mis-truth. Western water as it is concocted is not sustainable and the more money spend trying to prop up a broken concept is just a pipe dream.

This book is good if know nothing or a lot. I've read a few restaurant start up books and this one gave me a few tips I didn't know. It's not a long read. I'd recommend it to anyone who is thinking about opening a coffee shop. Or someone who already has a shop and is looking for a few new ideas.

I don't play the guitar, I just wanted the cd Pt 2

A Japanese CD Book, including 29 pieces of Square Enix sheet music specifically arranged for the guitar. The cd has Yuji Sekiguchi performing the same pieces from the book, as a kind of audio sampler. The book also has pages it calls "One point advice" between most of the songs, giving tips on playing specific songs; all of which is in Japanese.

In January 1959, 10 experienced young skiers set out to travel to a mountain named Mount Otorten in the far north of Russia. Otorten translates to "don't go there" in the local Mansi language. During the trip, one of the skiers fell ill and returned. The remaining nine lost their way and ended up on another mountain slope known as Kholat Syakhl, or "Mountain of the Dead." On the night of February 1, 1959, something or someone caused the skiers to flee their tent in terror, using knives to slash their way out instead of using the entrance. When they failed to return home, search parties were sent out and their bodies were found, some with massive internal injuries but all without external marks. The autopsy report showed that the injuries were caused by "an unknown compelling force." Subsequently, the area was sealed off for years by the authorities and the deaths and events of that night remained unexplained. Benefiting from original research carried out in Russia, this book attempts to explain what happened to the nine skiers who lost their lives in what has come to be known as the "Dyatlov Pass Incident."

McCloskey's book is about the best you will find

Of all the books that have appeared about the Dyatlov Horror, McCloskey's book is about the best you will find. It doesn't make absurd conclusions or come up with bizarre theories-it simply states what the known facts are and discusses the various theories good and bad points. The reader can then make their own decisions without being guided by biased ramblings that have plagued so many other books on the subject. He does point out several disturbing facts that there seems to have been some sort of coverup performed by un-named authorities and for equally unknown reasons.(one quick question he asks which I found significant-Why did the searchers bring with them a Geiger counter?) But, he does not dwell on these oddities and then moves on to list and discuss still more strange circumstances. In the end, I did feel that the incident was more criminal than supernatural, but, as said, the reader can study the facts and occurrences and make their own pronouncements. Over all, it's still a fascinating and disturbing mystery that quite likely will never be officially solved. It has been nearly 58 years and still nothing definitive has ever been discovered and it's more doubtful with every passing year that it ever will.

Dylatov Pass

If you dislike my review, then please feel free to write your own, but the following is my personal take on the book.

The book is written in workmanlike fashion, and almost overwhelms you with details, as well as Russian names that you cannot pronounce.

It is set against the backdrop of the cult-like, insular, and highly paranoid world of the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War. The military had installations virtually all over the countryside. Some were secret, some not, but there appeared to be no limit to the number and kind of weapons systems they were experimenting with in order to get a leg up on NATO and the United States. Could this have somehow been a factor in the tragedy? Perhaps.

When you examine something like this, you need to avoid the two extremes: What I (and others) refer to as "know nothing skepticism", where you insist there MUST be be a "simple" explanation (there may not be). You also need to steer clear of wild speculation, where you assume there MUST be some paranormal, or extraterrestrial, "answer" even when there is no hard evidence for it. While the freaky and wholly inexplicable "light show" observed by other credible individuals in that same general area in would definitely be enough to seriously spook anyone, there is nothing to indicate the doomed hikers ever encountered it, or anything like it.

Three things - but little else - seem certain. The first is that none of the speculations as to what happened - however mundane or fantastic - seem to fit all the facts. That is part of what makes this story so captivating.

The infrasound theory is intriguing, but remains unsubstantiated. We can say that infrasound is capable of this, or that, but so what? Absent empirical evidence, it remains a somewhat plausible but unrprovable and to some extent inadequate scenario in my estimation.

The second is that whatever the perceived threat was, it was not likely viewed by the group as emanating from the forest below. Otherwise, it would have made no sense for them to descend the slope and attempt to find some cover at the treeline. Thus, the danger was probably either at - or approaching - the tent, or somehow above them; either in the sky, or higher up the hill. I have not personally seen anything that points to a Yeti - or any other animal for that matter, real or mythical - being involved in this. Tracks of such a creature would have been fairly evident. I suspect some people like the abominable snowman scenario because it would definitely provide the requisite fear level that could cause otherwise sane people to panic.

Lastly, whatever transpired, something extraordinary occurred that was bizarre enough to cause intelligent, experienced back country skiers to completely lose their wits and behave in an irrational way that essentially ensured their own destruction.

When you add up all the evidence, including the condition and location of the bodies when they were found, it really does appear that something quite strange and out of the ordinary took place here. Remember, this was not some clueless suburban family out for a weekend trip to the snow. These were fit, equipped, and capable people who knew exactly what they were getting into. Yet, they all perished under highly mysterious circumstances.

The fact that high ranking Soviets were so involved in the search - and that the government closed off the area for years after the incident - suggests the authorities knew (or at least thought they knew) more about what had actually happened than they were willing to admit publicly.

A enduring, genuine true life mystery and an entertaining read.

Hoping For More

I really can't say I finished this book knowing much more than when I started, aside from fifty competing theories as to what happened. In terms of a recitation of the known facts, this book was fine, but the author elaborated too much on theories that were just not plausible, and didn't spend enough time fleshing out more likely scenarios.
