Astonishing Overview But Very Advanced-- Dynamic Systems is the Missing Keyword

The "South African" trim size of this text is unusual at 6 x 9 x 1.5 (inches), so the hefty 620 pages makes for a compact but heavy package, of GREAT value! For context, I'm CTO of a calculus animation company, and we use a lot of the techniques in this manual in our daily programming, design and Engineering work, including teaching chips to learn math.

The authors keep using the words "we are keeping this simple, for beginners" when describing their (mostly C++ with some Java) code, but South African "beginners" must already have MIT Masters in Math, Engineering and Computer Science if that's the case! The volume is so PACKED with great information on these unusual topics that there really is little time or space for beginners, to be honest. For example, (p. 309), we're exploring Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions for optimization, and with little warning, in two pages, we jump into and out of linear programming, then partial derivatives.

Math has become so specialized that it is EXTREMELY RARE to find even advanced Engineers and Mathematicians that have as broad a background as this collection requires. That's also its value-- even if you're very good in only a couple areas (say, linear algebra and inequalities), you can look up what get's tough and use this as a foundation. This is NOT for self study, but rather as a reference and adjunct with help from other volumes that cover the many topics in more detail. I'm not sure how I'd structure a course around it, other than an outstanding "applied" introduction to nonlinear techniques for grad students.

For teachers, you might find the "tempo" of this text a little foreign, but interesting, and PACKED with example after example. The tempo is bang-bang-bang-see? The examples are given staccato one after another, then the authors take a breather to do a little explaining. As an example, the authors give a frequent example of fixed points in dynamical systems as f(x)=x using 4x(1-x) as an example. You pause, look at it, then solve the quadratic yourself for 0 and 3/4 roots. These are just given, then 13 pages later, an example of the quadratic steps (that you already did yourself) is then given!

What's not in the title, subject, keywords, intro, covers, etc. is the actual topic of the book: Dynamic Systems Modeling. There are many dynamic systems books out there, but this is the ONLY one we've found that covers such a broad range of topics with a lot of OOP code that works quite well. I'm guessing that the 4 previous editions helped work out kinks in the code, because very few of these fail to compile first time. Like some old Engineers that use C++ but only use the "C" pieces and not the OOP parts (data/setter-getter/methods), there is enough here even if you don't use a lot of OOP. But if you do, there also is plenty of Java to keep you happy. Some of the C++ reads like pseudo-code and is "symbolic C++" to give you the general idea of the algorithm's implementation rather than exact code. BUT there are HUNDREDS of worked out examples that do run flawlessly.

The applied nature of the coverage is the real value here. The authors do take the time to discuss how many of these models are practically applied TODAY. Finding a book rather than a journal article that does this is very rare. And the journals that do cover these topics only come out a few times a year and cost $400+ US for a subscription!

I can't really say this is for beginners, but right in the middle of a bunch of complex code and math, the authors suddenly get very basic and explain stuff at an undergrad level. Fun, curious, and rewarding, but still too complex for self study in my opinion, unless you have a tutor or are good at supplementing with other texts and tutorials. On the other hand, as a survey and practical reference to the pragmatic sides of fractals, chaos and other "hip" topics-- this is MUCH better than the usual "consumer" fare of a lot of speculation with no substance. This text/manual/handbook has substance in every sentence.

Tries to speak to too many audiences, suffers from lack of focus

As a web site manager, I regularly move between developing in CSS and HTML, designing, and copyediting. I was hoping that this book would explore digital type in depth and give some focused attention on an important area of not just web development, but other digital environments like billboards and kiosks.

Instead, this book felt very ADD -- never lingering on one idea for more than a couple of pages and lacking good flow from one idea to the next. And unfortunately, the main body copy is in a bold or semi-bold typeface, which makes reading more difficult to begin with.

Details:
For example, the two pages on type anatomy and taxonomy (ascenders, descenders, etc.) don't hold anything new for designers. Plus, they come after "Web fonts: A short history" and "Rendering type on screen." Shouldn't a basic understanding of the parts of type come before talking about entire typefaces? And is it necessary to know the history of web fonts in order to work with type on screen right now? Another example: dropped right in between two sections on logotypes are two pages on working with color, and an attempt to summarize in one paragraph what makes a good logo.

One huge omission: information on accessibility.

The problem is that Lupton's audience is too broad: Designers, Writers, Developers, and Students. That's quite a range of knowledge and experience to address. The book is full of pieces which speak to only part of this audience at any one time, such as storyboarding, indicating type hierarchy in CSS and HTML, drop shadows and gradients, icons and logotypes, and animating text. Not one of these sections is in-depth because each is limited to two pages (on average).

Conclusion:
I can see "Type on Screen" being a companion book to a class for student web designers. It's a quick and dirty overview of what can happen to type on a screen. But it's not for anyone wanting to learn how to make it happen, or why they should choose one treatment over another.

Taught me what I need to know about type, on screen

As a long-time reader and fan of Ellen Lupton--her book, Thinking with Type, never leaves its place next to my keyboard--I thought I knew a thing or two about type and typography. Until, of course, I tried to apply some of my knowledge to a recent web-design project where most of what I know about leading, letter-spacing, kerning, grids, columns, marking paragraphs, and so on was either not applicable or almost impossible to implement.

Enter Type on Screen, which is very much the digital translation of its legendary analog counterpart. Lupton covers much of the familiar basics--fonts, grids, spacing, tables, etc--and supplements them with thoughtful short essay-lessons on layouts, interface, navigation, and content design, adding some fun "tips and tricks" for things like drop-shadows, gradients, icons, and logos that really bring a screen to life and add a level of sophistication far beyond what you get in a basic HTML/CSS primer. Most entertaining is the closing chapter, on animated type and GIFs, with a brief introduction to the Processing programming language, only enough to get you started and excited about the rich possibilities here.

Just as I would never design a print project, book, brochure, or broadsheet, without Thinking With Type open on my desk, I will never undertake a screen-based project, whether Web- or device-based, without Type on Screen nearby as concise reference and source of inspiration.

Best Book I've found on the subject!

For a while now, I've been looking for a book about working with screen-based type and I should have known the best one would come from Ellen Lupton. Her first book 'Thinking with Type' is unsurpassed and this follow-up is an excellent and required companion. ToS does for digital typography what TwT did for print design. It doesn't just show how to choose typefaces, but also how to plan screen navigation and do animation. Includes a great section on digital publications too. I definitely recommend it to any student or web designer.

Michael R. Solomon

MICHAEL R. SOLOMON, Ph.D., joined the Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia as Professor of Marketing in 2006, where he also serves as Director of the Center for Consumer Research. From 2007 to 2013 he also held an appointment as Professor of Consumer Behaviour at The University of Manchester in the U.K. From 1995 to 2006, he was the Human Sciences Professor of Consumer Behavior at Auburn University. Prior to joining Auburn in 1995, he was Chairman of the Department of Marketing in the School of Business at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey. Professor Solomon’s primary research interests include consumer behavior and lifestyle issues~ branding strategy~ the symbolic aspects of products~ the psychology of fashion, decoration, and image~ services marketing~ and the development of visually oriented online research methodologies. He currently sits on the editorial boards of the Journal of Consumer Behaviour, the European Business Review, and the Journal of Retailing, and he recently completed a six yearterm on theBoard of Governors of the Academy of Marketing Science. In addition to other books, he is also the author of Prentice Hall’s text Consumer Behavior Buying, Having, and Being, which is widely used in universities throughout the world. GREG W. MARSHALL, Ph.D., is the Charles Harwood Professor of Marketing and Strategy in the Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida and is also Academic Director of the Executive DBA program there. For three years he also served as Vice President for Strategic Marketing for Rollins. Before joining Rollins, he was on the faculty of Oklahoma State University, the University of South Florida, and Texas Christian University. He also holds a visiting professorship in the Marketing Group at Aston Business School, Birmingham, UK. Professor Marshall earned a BSBA in Marketing and an MBA from the University of Tulsa, and a Ph.D. in Marketing from Oklahoma State University. His research interests include sales management, marketing management decision making, and intraorganizational relationships. He is editor of the Journal of Marketing Theory and Practice and former editor of the Journal of Personal Selling & Sales Management and currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Business Research, and Industrial Marketing Management. Professor Marshall is Past President of the American Marketing Association Academic Division, a Distinguished Fellow and Past President of the Academy of Marketing Science, and a Fellow and Past President of the Society for Marketing Advances. His industry experience prior to entering academe includes product management, field sales management, and retail management positions with firms such as WarnerLambert, the Mennen Company, and Target Corporation.

ELNORA W. STUART, Ph.D., is Professor of Marketing and Associate Dean of the George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics at the University of South Carolina Upstate. Prior to joining USC Upstate in 2008, she was Professor of Marketing and the BP Egypt Oil Professor of Management Studies at the American University in Cairo, Professor of Marketing at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and on the faculty of the University of South Carolina. She has also been a regular visiting professor at Instituto de Empresa in Madrid, Spain. She earned a BA in Theatre/Speech from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and both a Master of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication, and a Ph.D. in Marketing from the University of South Carolina. Professor Stuart’s research has been published in major academic journals including the Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Advertising, Journal of Business Research, and Journal of Public Policy and Marketing. An excellent Intro to Marketing Text

This text gives a great overview of the many aspects of marketing. The text explains all aspects in great theoretical detail with an abundance of real world examples to clearify each point. The text is up to date and the real people, real decisions stories are quite interesting and fitting to the subject of their respective chapters.
The book was easy to read and all important points are highlighted and defined in the page margins.
The study guide which comes with the text helps students remember the key points of each chapters by providing a brief summary of the chapter followed by a number questions of all different types.
This is the second administration text book that I have bought from Pearson Education and I would recommend this book for anyone who is taking or planning on taking an introduction to marketing course at the University or College level or even for those who just wish to know more about the topic of marketing.

Big Savings over U.S. version

I saved big by buying an used International version of this textbook. The printed quality of some of the pages was a little blurry, but otherwise the book was in very good condition.

The product was accurately described and shipping was super-fast. I placed the order on the 5th and had the book 3 business days later. I couldn't be happier!

Other sellers & sites describe this version as being identical to the U.S. version, except for the front cover. That's not entirely true. The international version is 22 pages off. For example, page 50 of the U.S. version would be page 72 of the international version.

Best Textbook I Have Had. Ever.

I got this for my online Marketing Class. The book is very easy to read, and it's even easier to find most concepts for quick reference during papers and quizzes. It's got a great breadth to it, and the writer must have been open-minded since it includes a lot of what I would think of as niche examples of things (Kevin Smith, greetings in Japanese stores, etc). It's a fun book as far as textbooks go.

A great relief

I've been following Primal/Slow Carb for years in addition to maintaining a rigorous workout schedule every week. It has been super frustrating to be doing everything "right" but (as the author sympathizes) to see my fat loss ideal always just out of reach. It's especially torturous when you are lean but can't seem to break past the plateau despite following the advice of several fitness gurus. Within a week of experimenting with the techniques outlined in this book I began seeing reliable yet dramatic results. It's as simple as it gets so it feels relieving to finally find a solution that works. I only wish I had found it sooner!

Excellent science based approach to fat loss

Pete Anthony provides a very effective, science based approach to losing fat. He covers some important ground, dispatching with myths about fat loss and the actual peer reviewed science that is useful in understanding how to get lean. I've read dozens of books on nutrition and fitness; Pete's book is unique in providing a very practical path that can be used to reduce bodyfat without making yourself crazy.

No supplements or extreme workout are required. Kudos to Mr. Anthony for this excellent book that presents a very realistic formula for getting lean. Highly recommended.

Exactly what I was looking for

I have been trying to lose weight successfully for a long time now. Through the process, I procured disordered eating habits that I needed to heal from first in order to try to lose weight again.

I will never again attempt to lose weight in a way that makes my life unenjoyable. Because it's a) crazy and b) because I know it's unnecessary!

This is a great ebook for outlining simple, sustainable ways to lose weight and how to implement them in a manner which you can stick to. As Pete has said himself, the ability to lose weight effectively and maintain leanness is an imperative skill for any human living in the 21st century to learn.

If you want a clear guide to learning to lose weight in a way that won't tax your sanity, read this ebook.

P. S. I gave this four out of five stars because there was too much repetition through the book and I felt it could have used another look through before publishing. That said, the redundancy did not take away from the valuable information I sought out from this ebook.

Great textbook

I purchased this book a few months ago, as a means of self studying for the AP Environmental Science exam. So far, this book has proved to be excellent in successfully learning the material, and emphasizes the everlasting dispute between science and values. I initially wanted to only take this test for some easy college credit; however, Environmental Science has now become a very interesting subject for me thanks to this amazing book. Through great pictures and maps, the reader can more thoroughly comprehend the material. I definately give this book 5 stars, as it is greatly written and has made me far more interested in the subject.

In Complex Cognition: The Psychology of Human Thought, Sternberg and Ben-Zeev offer an original analysis of the field. The authors explain that in the past several decades there have been two dominant approaches in cognitive studies. One was of normative reference-represented by the "economic-person" and utility models-according to which people are rational thinkers who, in making decisions, thoroughly consider all alternatives and how to weigh them. The other, a contrasting and more contemporary approach, is the model of "bounded rationality," according to which people are surprisingly irrational, or at best a-rational, in their thinking, often deriving ill-conceived shortcuts that lead them to wrong conclusions. This text is a synthesis of these two approaches, combining the best elements of each to offer a radically inclusive new theory. It emphasizes multiple points of view, including the objective, but also the subjective views of the self and others. For example, from their own subjective points of view, people think sensibly, if not always wholly rationally; from an outside, objective point of view, their thinking often is not rational. However, according to the authors, the objective stance is not more correct than the subjective stance: They are just different points of view that lead to different conclusions as to what is rational.

About the Author
Robert J. Sternberg is Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Psychology at Tufts University. Prior to being at Tufts, he was IBM Professor of Psychology and Education, Professor of Management in the School of Management, and Director of the Center for the Psychology of Abilities, Competencies, and Expertise at Yale University. This center, now relocated to Tufts, is dedicated to the advancement of theory, research, practice, and policy advancing the notion of intelligence as developing expertise, as a construct that is modifiable and capable, to some extent, of development throughout the lifespan. The Center seeks to have an impact on science, education, and society. Sternberg was the 2003 President of the American Psychological Association and is the 2006 2007 President of the Eastern Psychological Association. He was on the Board of Directors of the American Psychological Association and the Board of Trustees of the APA Insurance Trust. He is currently on the Board of Trustees of the American Psychological Foundation and on the Board of Directors of the Eastern Psychological Association as well as of the American Association of Colleges and Universities. Sternberg received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1975 and his B.A. from Yale University. He holds honorary doctorates from eight universities. He is the author of over 1,100 journal articles, chapters, and books. He focuses his research on intelligence, creativity, and wisdom and has studied love and close relationships as well as hate. This research has been conducted on five different continents.
