. . . intriguing and mildly disturbing

Do Go Gentle is a nobly written biography and autobiography. Mr. Stookey, 83 years old, is found lying face up on the floor next to his bed. The diagnosis: He has suffered from a severe stroke, the right size of his body from head to toe is paralyzed, and he is unable to speak or swallow. With no signs of improvement, the family is faced with a decision - to move Mr. Stookey to a nursing home or bring him home to die by withholding food and water.

Do Go Gentle is intriguing and mildly disturbing. Many questions come to mind such as: What other solutions could have been made? Did the son (also the author of the book) do his best in accurately upholding his father's wishes based on the little information his father provided? Or did the son assume his father's wishes and interpret "clues" to justify his decisions? What were these so-called clues? Could they have been interpreted differently? Were Mr. and Mrs. Stookey and the daughter, Lori, in full agreement with the son's "plan"? or did they simply go along with what was already decided? What does the story really reveal?
Although recounting real events, this book reads like fiction -- captivating and suspenseful. Why did Mrs. Stookey have a blank look when the nurse asked for Mr. Stookey's advanced directive? Why did Mrs. Stookey, the son, Chris, and the daughter, Lori, not know Mr. Stookey's emergency arrangements and yet . . . . how does the ten-year family doctor whom the son never met previously, presume to explicitly articulate Mr. Stookey's wishes? What really was the "Hemlock file" and why didn't the son share this file earlier on? Lastly, who exactly is Mr. Stookey and why is his life story, in and of itself, so inspirational?

I highly recommend Do Go Gentle for anyone who has a loved one. I also recommend this book as a primary source and required reading for college courses dealing with humanities and ethics.

Throughout the book, the son reveals love and admiration for his father. My favorite quote: 'I must have been three or four years old . . . I'm holding onto [my dad's] head and we're both smiling at the camera. We look happy.' - Chris Stookey

Important account of a debilitating stroke

This is a well-written, careful, compassionate look at how a doctor/son decides what to do when his father has a debilitating stroke. Fortunately his father had made clear that he would not have wanted to live in such a condition and, fortunately too, the family was OK with the painful decision to bring him home but not provide food and fluids. This is a long, difficult way to die. Some form of legal assisted dying would have been merciful and more consistent with his long-expressed wishes. The situation of a debilitating stroke is not unusual and can present an endless, expensive, tragic nightmare for a family if they haven't discussed what the person would want. This is an important little book. I recommend it to anyone who is a parent or an adult child.

About the Author
Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz is internationally regarded as one of the leading scholars and rabbis of this century. His education includes a degree in mathematics from Hebrew University, in addition to his rabbinic studies. Rabbi Steinsaltz founded the Israel Institute for Talmudic Publications; under its aegis, he has published fifty-eight books on the Talmud, Jewish mysticism, religious thought, sociology, historical biography, and philosophy. His biography of the famed Rabbi Menachem Schneerson will be published in 2007. These books have been translated into Russian, English, French, Portuguese, Swedish, Japanese, and Dutch. He lives in Jerusalem.

Insightful and Understandable Look at Kabbalah

Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz is a Talmudic scholar with a real knack for rendering complex Kabbalistic concepts understandable. Although I have really just begun this study, I recommend his work, among with that of others such as Daniel Matt, to anyone with an interest in Kabbalah.

The Thirteen Petalled Rose is a relatively short book of just under 200 pages. It's content is divided into ten sections: Worlds, Divine Manifestation, The Soul Man, Holiness, Torah, The Way of Choice, The Human Image, Repentance, The Search for Oneself, and Mitzvot (commandments). While all of this information was wonderful, I found the author's presentation of the four worlds especially compelling.

Traditional Kabbalistic sources describe four known spiritual realms called, from higher to lower, Atzilut (emanation), Beriah (creation), Yetzirah (formation) and Assiyah (action). Steinsaltz expands on these traditional divisions quite clearly noting that there are many levels within each of the known spiritual realms as well as other lower realms not thought of as part of the four worlds as listed above.

Steinsaltz begins with our world, the world of action, explaining that this observed world is a part of a vast array of worlds, most of which are spiritual. He points out that these worlds do not exist somewhere else but in another dimension and describes a dynamic relationship between worlds with a very real exchange of influence occurring. He stresses that occurrences in our world impact on other worlds and can affect significant change in the spiritual realms. I could not agree more.

The author works through each of the spiritual dimensions in highly coherent way explaining concepts and terminology in original and insightful ways. He explains, 'higher' and 'lower' worlds (for example) in terms of 'nearer' and 'farther' or degrees of 'transparency' to the divine light. And tells us that, as one descends through the worlds materiality becomes greater and a sense of independence is felt with an ever increasing intensity. This blocks the divine light and obscures, per the author, the unchanging essence that lurks beneath the personality.

I find Steinsaltz's understanding of divinity, angels, humans and the reality we inhabit impressive. I imagine a reality of not four but almost innumerable levels with good deeds and sacred actions radiating upward and outward, expanding and elevating, and ultimately touching the divinity to which we are all connected.

I feel that I have come away from this reading with a clearer understanding of the nature of spiritual beings and the very fundamental differences between angels and man. Additionally I found the text validating on a personal level as it is my deep-seated belief that there are many largely imperceptible dimensions beyond our own limited understanding of what is. I could not recommend this book more highly!

Very interesting

I find this book to be a little wordy. I also felt that Rebbi Steinsaltz's paraphrasing is a bit over the top. The context is very interesting and leaves the reader wanting to read more. It is hard to put the book down. I would highly recommend this book to those interested in Torah, Kabbela and Talmud / Mishnah

Intimate.

This book reveals the deepest dialogues between a man and G-d. Only someone with an impeccable commitment to honesty is capable of detecting and translating into words the knowledge transmitted to him by The Source in moments of silence. Over 150 illustrations have been included to demonstrate important principles and commonly encountered genetic disorders. Each chapter contains a brief review of a major landmark publication to provide a historical context for more contemporary developments. To help sustain the student's interest and to emphasise the potential importance of genetics in medicine, large numbers of clinically related vignettes have been included covering controversial issues, such as gene patenting and the UK Biobank, together with case histories and brief biographies of famous figures from history and the arts who have suffered from, and successfully coped with, a genetic disorder.

Eye-opening, life-saving, most enjoyable read.

For the purpose of this review, I thought it's important to give some of my background. I'm a 24-year-old medical student and I'm a practising Muslim, having learned Islamic studies ever since I was little up till I was 19, so I have extensive knowledge about it. I have always been inquisitive and questioning by nature, and I brought these into the realm of my Islamic studies to further understand Islam, much to the discomfort of other students ("common Muslims" are discouraged from having "obviously questioning" discussions as they are deemed to have inadequate scholarly knowledge). After years of study (including comparing other faiths), even though I was brought up as a Muslim, I believed in Islam on my own accord. I realised my same-sex attraction ever since I was about 9, but I thought I was attracted to females as well, so I concluded I was a bisexual some years later. I have been taught that homosexuality has no place in Islam, but it didn't bother me as much as I thought I could always settle with a girl. Late 2009, after further reflection and exploration, I concluded that I was actually gay, not having any sexual attraction toward females. This epiphany brought intense internal conflict - a battle between my religion and my sexuality. I desperately searched for answers.

Scott Kugle is the first Muslim to publish widely on the issue of homosexuality and transgender identity in Islam. Like some gay Muslim advocates, I expected a very emotionally-driven writing to defend queers when I bought this book. Instead, I was delightfully surprised by his neutral-sounding, critical and objective writing, reflecting years of careful research and synthesis of valid ideas. This book is divided into systematic sections, bringing readers into natural progression across his arguments. His introductory chapter is a wonderful summary of his whole book, telling readers what to expect in this book. He begins soon with discussion into the nature of human sexuality (including inherent nature of homosexuality) as a basis for his argument throughout the rest of the book.

The next chapter is all about the Qur'an's stand on the issue of homosexuality. It's about liberating the Qur'an from shackles of previous traditional/classical (mis)interpretation of this issue, which I had come to accept as an absolute "fact" from my years of study. The arguments are laid out logically and coherently, free from "twisting of the fact" as accused by the majority of Islamic authorities. This chapter changed my view of the scholars' interpretation of the Qur'an as almost infallible. A very eye-opening section of the book.

The following chapter talks about the hadith (Prophet Muhammad's sayings). In desperation to make syaria laws and rulings, jurists have used weak and (highly possibly) false/fabricated hadiths to justify condemnation of homosexuality and punishments for homosexual acts. Throughout my Islamic studies, I have surprisingly discovered many weak or fabricated hadiths that the "common Muslims" have accepted to be truth, so this chapter of the book serves to reinforce my discovery. Another eye-opening chapter if you aren't familiar with the studies of hadiths.

Next comes the chapter on assessing fiqh (Islamic legal reasoning). It focuses on the legal standing of homosexuality and male-male anal intercourse, some female-female relations. This chapter and the next chapter is tightly linked, as the idea to legalise homosexual relationships (in the eyes of God) via marriage (nikah) is explored, which requires critical reassessment of the current (patriarchal) idea of nikah between man and woman. This chapter provides solutions to the "problem" of homosexual relationships, and I commend the author for providing solutions too instead of simply presenting his arguments for homosexuality. The last chapter before the conclusion presents points for transgender individuals, which is also a great read.

Overall, this book is simply a superb buy, and in retrospect, I would have gladly paid even more for the quality of writing that I receive from this book. Who do I recommend it too? Well, of course for LGBTIQ Muslims this book is a must-read. I'd also recommend all Islamic teachers, imams, scholars, and authorities to give this book a read and please do so with an open and neutral mind, as I have forced myself to do (due to my classical/traditional Islamic understanding). For LGBTIQ Muslims, I would also recommend borrowing/buying this book for your Muslim friends and family members who might have trouble understanding our position. I also think that non-Muslims can benefit from this book, to help them understand that Islam is accommodating to queers. Basically, "Homosexuality in Islam" deserves a place in everyone's bookshelf.

An academic must.

These concepts shared in this book are nothing short of brilliant. Without ever having to refute or deny any words of the Qur'an itself, Siraj brings forth a truly educated, thorough, and refreshing alternative perspective to what many educated individuals (Muslim or otherwise) see as rigid and disingenuous interpretation of the faith (ie conservative straight males perspective ONLY). It is these 21st century ideas that can help bridge the divide among Islam in other cultures, should they choose to do so. Siraj talks about people and the purpose of faith and defies the taboo without apology a without undermining the faith.

The naysayers are all the same. The same things they said about Fatima Mernissi and anyone else who challenges the old patriarchal ways about anything.

On a personal note, this book not only changed my entire perspective of Islam (for the better no less), but helped me write one of the best academic research papers I think I have written. It is a must read for anyone interested in this very complex subject.

Thorough

This is an extremely thorough investigation into this topic. If there is anyone out there that finds themselves conflicted on this issue, this book can be a guiding light (may Allah accept this effort). Also, as may not be clear from the title, this book also discusses transgender issues.
