Veggie Power

I got this book to help me through my son's fussy eating stage. Being vegetarians my son would eat pretty much any veggie I served up. This all changed when he hit the 18 month mark. Ive since then had to blend up all his veggies and hide them to make sure he isn't missing out on all their benefits. This became VERY frustrating and with my son being now 26 months old he needed to be at least some non mushed veggies to go with his other normal foods. I came across this book after viewing Sarah's youtube channel and I must say I am so happy with the decision. After reading the book once my son ate his side of Broccoli (we eat ours raw) and he even stole some of our guinea pigs broccoli and spinach to munch for him self. I am so pleased as to how quick my son is attempting to eat his veggies again and it is his favorite bedtime book. My son now thinks he has veggie power!

This book works like magic on kids!!!!

This book is like a secret weapon to "trick" kids (in a good way, of course) into eating their veggies, and especially broccoli. I can't believe how quickly it worked too. My daughter is convinced that eating broccoli will give her super powers now. Love it!

I like this book--a lot.

I've had this book
that's covered in dirt
for years
and years
and years.
(apologies to Michael Rosen)
I loved this book into the ground, the binding fell apart years ago, so I had to buy a new copy, and now the old one sits quietly in a special drawer at home. (I'm a college student.)
It has classics such as Rosen's "I've had this shirt..." and Masefield's Sea Fever.
There's everything from Anthem for Doomed Youth (Wilfred Owen), to "Be kind and tender to the frog, and do not call him names..."
Poems for kids, poems for everybody.

I Like This Poem; I Love This Book!

The International Year of the Child - What's that? It seems nowadays that the idealism of the 1979 UN proclamation, along with UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, have been consigned to history, something quaint for collectors of stamps and other memorabilia. As the editor of "I Like This Poem," Kaye Webb, points out, there is always a poem to console us, to give us hope.

"I Like This Poem" was truly a labor labor of love, if you would excuse the cliche. Although Ms. Webb's name appears on the cover, it was her idea and will to have children in age groups, from Age 6 through 15, to select their own favorite poems. She did all the hard, less glamourous work of compiling the children's favorites and doing all the tedious paperwork in securing the rights to publish them. She went a step further, giving each child his or her say in why a particular poem is a favorite, a major part of the charm of the book.

Divided into sections by age group, children from a wide geographic area have selected poems, some funny and some serious but all that speak from the heart. What is interesting is that a good number of poems have been chosed from "adult" poets, such as William Shakespeare, James Joyce, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Walt Whitman, and Langston Hughes, just to name a few. Of course, there entries by Lewis Carrol, Roald Dahl, Eve Merriam, Robert Louis Stevenson, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Ogden Nash - again, the sheer variety makes this book an intersting read for young and old(er) alike. All this goes to prove that children can never be too young for classic "adult" poetry and adults and never be too young for "children's" poetry. The best poems, as I have said, speak from the hear, to all of us and appeal to all our humanity.

As this book was first published in 1979, you will not find the current classic humorous "children's" poetry from the likes of Shel Silverstein, Jeff Moss, Bruce Lansky, Jack Prelutsky, and Douglas Florian. That's OK - there are many fine collections by these poems on the market today. That said, a few notable writers are absent, especially those from non-English-speaking countries. For example, I would have loved to have seen at least one poem by Federico Garcia Lorca. Also missing are Emily Dickinson and Christina Rosetti, both of whom produced numerous fine pieces that would appeal to children. But the collection presented here offers a great deal to be savored.

Now, why did I mention the 1979 UN International Year of the Child? According to various sources, this anthology was compiled in honor of the world's recognition of the dignity of the child. This book does an admirable job toward that goal; it is, therefore, a mystery as to why the publisher does not mention this important fact anywhere in the front matter. The UN Declaration of the Rights of the Child, upon which the IYC is based, was inspired by Janusz Korczak, a Polish educator and pediatrician who cared for orphaned children and ultimately died with them at the Nazi death camp of Treblinka in 1942. Dr. Korczak wrote many books on the dignity of children, including "How to Love a Child" and "The Child's Right to Respect." By allowing the children to select their favorite poems, Kaye Webb book honors both these ideals. This is indeed an anthology to treasure.

Excellent. You will keep this book.

Bought this for a class, but I would recommend it to anyone looking for a complete, clear and well laid out discussion of small business management. This text walks you from beginning concepts to selling the business and everything in between. It is a book you will keep and refer to often. It has meaningful chapter summaries, discussion questions, and practical activities, all designed to give the reader aware the practical knowledge of what they need to know. The text is a bit small, but the information is excellent and worth the price of readers if needed.

This is a solid introductory text in small business management. It is essential reading for anyone thinking of starting a business or investing in someone else's venture. I bought it because it was assigned for a summer course at the Isenberg School at UMass Amherst. I have no complaints. The chapters are long but every page is packed with useful knowledge. The authors make extensive use of real-world examples. Students should keep this book as a desk reference as they begin careers as entrepreneurs or managers.

VIgnettes of Human Vulnerabilty and Dignity

This is an unusual book--definitely not a novel, for the plot is non-existant. The storyline alternates among 4 teenagers and 3 veterans of different wars--none of whom meet each other. According to the Summary, there is a theme which provides commonality/literary glue (see Heading) but even that is somewhat obscure. The chapters are short and read quickly. Master story-teller Paulsen held my interest because I kept waiting for the four protagonists to interact and solve the world's problems--or at least their own.
But it was not to be, which lead to my frustration and disappointment. If he just wanted to write good short stories, he could have rearranged them, so that readers would realize when the end had been reached about a specific young adult. Nor did I notice any thread of nuclear disaster, as proclaimed on the back of the book. I found human vulnerability and dignity, as these young people sought meaning and direction in their lives. All four pursued th! eir goals differently, but it was unfortuate that they never knew of each other's dilemmas, so they could learn from each other's experience. A sad commentary on the social isolation of the teen years. Knowing the heights to expect from Paulsen, I felt cheated.

Heart of youths and Mother Nature

I am a junior high school teacher in Japan.I found this wonderful book in the school library.Everybody will be amazed by the construction of this book.But the more important thing is the vivid description of the heart of the youth.I love the story of Sue and the story of Lola especially. An Indian girl,Sue,met an Indian boy.And she woke up her self-knowledgement as an Indian.It was described through the changing of the way which she viewed her grandfather.I want to listen to him singing stories about animals,the wind,moon and seasons. The story of Lola,an only child in a sheep ranch,is also impressive .I can imagine the smell of the birth of sheep when reading this stoty.The connection between Lola and her parents through the common work of keeping sheep,was certainly described. The stories of three youths in the battle field are realistic because the auther heard them from the real soldiers from that time.I have been trying to tell the students about the misery of the war,so that the stories of young soldiers are impressive. I read Gary Paulsen's other book"TRACKERS".In this book the boy's changing heart about death was also described vividly. Peter Paulsen said that he wrote these books for youths but they touched on my heart as well although I am 55 years old.I think Gary Paulsen is a wonderful writer who can describe the heart of youths and Mother Nature vividly.

Sentries is a book about four people with the same dream. Dave,Laura,Sue,and Peter all have the same dream. Though they do not know each other at all. This book has many intresting events that will make you wonder.Also the life stories of these four people and the things they did to get where they are. Best book on subject on market today.

This is a fabulous work. Well written, almost a page turner. I've read, or been reading, Protein Evolution by Laszlo Patthy and Molecular Evolution by Page and Holmes. These are good books, but left me wanting clarification and greater depth. I searched the UCSD BioMed Library and discovered Li's Molecular Evolution. Just what I was looking for. It's a nice improvement over the Principles of Molecular Evolution by Li and Graur. I note a new edition of the latter book is due out soon which makes me wonder if the new book might not be an update to Li's book. The only reason I didn't give the book 5 stars is the typography. The print and style of the earlier work by Li and Graur is far superior.

Serious molecular evolution

The general reader who has already read some other references on molecular methods will find this reference to be a reasonable to read yet fairly detailed, comprehensive overview of molecular methods used to discern evolutionary history. The reference begins with the fundamentals of gene structure and function, population genetics, and evolutionary changes in DNA sequences. The use of molecular methods to determine phylogenetic relationships between organisms is then discussed. Molecular clocks are discussed as well. Gene duplication is then discussed. This has been an important mechanism for generating new genes in the evolution of life on Earth. As well, duplication of portions of genes and subsequent 'exon shuffling' or 'domain shuffling', allows the emergence of proteins with new or improved functions. Concerted evolution, the phenomenon that DNA sequences of species evolve so that DNA sequences of the organism maintain similarities to each other, often being more similar internally than with homologous DNA sequences from related species, is then discussed. Gene conversion recombination and unequal crossing over are given as mechanisms for the phenomenon of concerted evolution. Transposable genetic elements are then discussed. Although there is controversy with regards to the effect that mobile genes have had on the evolution of life, they show that the genome is not a static structure, but is susceptible to evolutionary changes. Genome organization is then discussed. It is interesting to note that genome sizes of different bacteria is discontinuous, suggesting that genome duplication occurred in a variety of lineages, especially so 1.8 billion years ago when oxygen appeared in the atmosphere. The variation in genome size of eukaryotes is even greater than in bacteria, from 9 million base pairs in some fungi to 670,000 million base pairs in some diatoms (for reference, the genome size of E. coli bacteria is 4.7 million base pairs, that of humans is 3400 million base pairs), although the amniotes (ie, reptiles, birds and mammals) show much less variation in genome size. These results indicate that genome size itself only offers potential for complexity, as well as the implication that much of eukaryotic DNA does not code for anything. Other results also show that large amounts of eukaryotic DNA consists of repetitive segments. Mechanisms for the variation in eukaryotic DNA observed include genome duplication (although polyploidy is rare in animals reproducing via sex), chromosome duplications, transpositions, unequal crossing-over, and DNA amplification. The final chapter considers the selectionist-neutralist debate. Selectionists have a neo-Darwinian view of evolution, ie, there is genetic variability in the population which is changed by natural selection. The neutralists view evolution as being driven more by the rate of mutation than by selection.
