" another missing piece of our rich history and profound contribution to western civilization. For history buffs please put this book on your must read list... "George C. Fraser, Author of Race For Success andSuccess Runs In Our Race"[Mitchell] believes that the entire future of blacks in the field of architecture is in jeopardy He then discusses the impact of the Harlem Renaissance on black architecture and the subsequent emergence of Howard University as the center of the black architectural universe..."The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education" seminal " Architecture MagazineIn this long overdue book, aimed at Black America and her allies, Melvin Mitchell poses the question "why haven't black architects developed a Black Architecture that complements modernist black culture that is rooted in world-class blues, jazz, hip-hop music, and other black aesthetic forms?" His provocative thesis, inspired by Harold Cruse's landmark book, The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual, exposes the roots of an eighty-year-old estrangement between black architects and Black America.Along the way he provides interesting details about the politics of downtown development in the Marion Barry era of Washington, DC. Mitchell calls for a bold and inclusive "New (Black) Urbanism." He sees the radical reform and "re-missioning" of the handful of accredited HBCU based architecture schools as a critical tool in refashioning a rapprochement between black architects and Black America.

3 books in one
By Peter J. Wood
There are three stories here, coherently and pleasanatly - if autobiographicaly - offered. A personal and overall history of architecture education for African-Americans; a Washington, D.C. history of African-American architects from post-war to the 80's; and some personal and thought provoking ideas about what might/should be the education of African-American architects today. Interestingly, much of what is said can be applied to a much broader audience in that the African-American experience and the changes in the education of the architect are not too different than what one might observe and propose for all architects - mainly, that the education of the architect must prepare them to move up the food chain so they are not the last professional hired when buildings are about to happen. In addition, there is a strong recommendation that African-American architects begin to serve the African-American community.
This is an intersting read for a somewhat narrow audience - mainly architecture educators and those at the HBCU's, but well worth the time.

The Crisis of the African-American Architect
By M. Samuels
Excellent book. Firsts in Architecture are mentioned. The dichotomy between Booker T. Washington and DuBois is highlighted in terms of the differences in their approach to teaching architecture at Tuskegee and Howard, respectively. I learned quite a bit from reading this tome. African-Americans, and Americans will enjoy reading the power hierarchy of the profession as it was, and still is seen as a "White Gentleman's Profession," as the author, Melvin L. Mitchell describes the architecture profession. Buy the book!

This book ia a must for any young person or anyone with a interest in the field of Architecture. Very well written. Mr. Mitchell makes many keen and astute observations. He clearly defines the problems, hurdles, and challenges facing people of different socio-economic backgrounds. But he also points out that the field is very rewarding for the aspiring builder, and it does offers opportunitis, and is wide open for innovation and change.
