Ho-hum and unrealistic
By Michalea Moore
I read a review of this book while standing in a very long line at the grocery store. It sounded intriguing, so I came home and downloaded it to my kindle. (Thank god, the kindle price is only 99 cents.)
The first real issue with this novel is that the premise is a non-issue. The ascension to the British throne is very controlled. I quote: A person born to parents who are not married to each other at the time of birth is not included in the line of succession and passes no rights to their descendants. The subsequent marriage of the parents does not alter this. Always been that way; probably always will.
The second issue is that the writing itself is fairly pedestrian. A lot of the descriptions of places around London and Paris sound like they were copied out of a travel guide and slightly (ever so slightly) edited. The sex scenes are boring.
The third issue is that the author clearly has not done much research on the Royal family. There are lots of mistakes that someone who has read a couple of articles in People would catch. (Like the fact that the protagonist has a hard time finding out who William and Kate's friends are. You can practically get home addresses and Facebook pages from the tabloids.)
Finally, while I am a fan of "willing suspension of disbelief" in literature, this book stretches it to the breaking point. The idea that a daughter of Charles and Diana (neither of them known for their intellectual prowess) would become a brilliant doctor is just laughable.
I gave up midway through the book when I started falling asleep between virtual pages.

Ugh, Mary Sue
By reader
I downloaded this book because I thought it might make for a light-hearted read, with adventure, romance, the works.
The book still has all that but what made it much less enjoyable is how shallow the characters are and how unrealistic everything seemed. I enjoy stories about intrigue and royal scandals and am perfectly willing to suspend disbelief (I enjoy books in the fantasy genre). However, I find myself having difficulties immersing into the world that the author created. Granted, I am only about halfway into the book and I have hopes (not high) that things would get better...
The title character, Olivia, seems to be a complete Mary Sue. She's beautiful, a brilliant doctor, and her former (and now current) lover just so happened to be head over heels in love with her. Scotland Yard is at Olivia's beck and call, and she seems to be the most important thing in the universe. That makes no sense to me. All this seems to be a set up for the main couple to gush to each other about how much they love each other in the romantic locale that they just happen to run away to. Maybe this whole thing would have bothered me less if the characters are more likable. But that is the problem, at least for me. They have no substance, no depth to their personalities, only their perfection. I half expect Edward...I mean Daniel...to start glittering.
All in all, an interesting premise and this book could have been much more to my taste given more realistic characters.

give it a pass

This was the most convoluted piece of drivel I have ever read. I kept reading thinking something profound would happen but it was just running and chasing. Don't waste your time.
