Good flow, good introduction, excellent explanations, but not an overload or steep learning curve.
By GregoryDearth
This is actually a reasonable text for learning Java. It goes through step by step with plenty of code examples even at the basic level. The best way to learn a language is by practice. Simply copying the code from the book into an IDE is a good way to memorize the formatting and syntax of the language. The deeper concepts are presented without overwhelming the reader. If an explanation is not necessary at the early stages in the text, it lets you know that it will be explained later and simply bypasses that explanation as unimportant for the moment. I like that approach. For example, I don't have to know why System.out.println() is formatted that way when I am just trying to create my "hello world" program. I would like to eventually know, but only after explaining and thoroughly demonstrating object/class relations would that even make sense. As a language, Java is a bit odd (compared to C, for example). It takes some getting used to. But once you have the basics figured out (by chapter 3 or so), you can really start creating programs from scratch pretty easily. Just take good notes, memorize the key objects and classes and how to type them out, and you will be programming before you even get through the first 30 pages. I don't often like how IT subject matter is formatted in text books for college. So this is a rare exception.
